FISH smell from stripping paint

I've been stripping paint off some internal doors. The paint I'm removing appears to be yellowed gloss. I've used a heat gun/paint stripper, and then an electric sander. I discovered numerous layers of paint. The doors have been here for around 70 years, and I think people have just continued to add new layers on top of old layers.

It stinks of rotten fish!!!

Should I have just invested in new doors? I've put so many hours into it now that I don't want to admit defeat! Also, this is social housing , not privately owned/privately let.... no previous tenant had a vested interest in doing anything more than absolutely necessary!

I'm trying to improve the flat so that I can find someone to swap with me (I'm not safe here)...

....why does it smell like fish?
.....this has been hours and hours of relentless work! Should I have just tried to buy some new doors?
.....what should I do now?? 🤷‍♀️

Why are you not safe? Can you be moved somewhere safe?

I'm not safe because of one of my neighbours who is heavily in to drug dealing. He intimidated me to try and make me get involved in his business. I've made it clear that I am not interested. I was really scared I could have been forced into it. He seems to have accepted for now that I am not going to have anything to do with it. I wouldn't anyway, I'm a law abiding citizen. but I do feel extremely concerned with knowing what I know...and if at any point he may change his mind and decide not to leave me alone.....or if he gets in trouble with the police and thinks it's anything to do with me . I would rather just get away from here asap. I cannot get help from the police or housing association without revealing his name, which I am not prepared to do, the repercussions could be severe.

So, I'm just trying to make my flat look nicer so that someone else might swap with me. .....and now I am concerned that it smells like fish 😄

P.s. please don't berate me for trying to swap! I would not swap with anyone as vulnerable as myself. I'm only being targeted by him because I have specific vulnerabilities, I wouldn't swap with another vulnerable person.
