Where do deVOL kitchens put the microwave?

I’ve been reading loads of threads on here about kitchen and spent a long time on DIY Kitchens planner. I’ve realised I’m not into open plan, bright and light and want to start to seriously look at more traditional kitchens. We have a typical. Victorian terrace house, the type people usually do open plan huge side and rear extensions, so a small traditional kitchen would be right. I’ve seen deVOL mentioned here and ordered their catalogue. But where do they put microwaves? I’ve seen ovens, kettles and toasters in the photos but no microwave. Is it the type of thing where if you have a microwave you’re not a deVOL customer? None of their stuff shows a tambour or larder hiding a microwave. The brochure is a bit pretentious, so I don’t want to bother contacting them if they can’t position a microwave.

I find that most kitchen companies don't seem to feature them in photos. I know they're ugly, but we still need them!

Our microwave is built into the double oven. So the top part of the double oven is also a microwave. Doesn't help if you have a stove type cooker though.

aesoplover · 31/08/2024 19:58

Also friends of ours have their microwave in the utility

Notyetthere · 31/08/2024 22:39

People tend to not like microwaves on show. We use ours everyday, several times a day so we don't wish to lock it away in a cupboard/larder/utility. You do what you want.

I’m not asking where to put the microwave, I’m asking for people’s experience of deVOL’s designers and if they accommodate modern practicalities. Every other designer has some practicality shown in instagram or on their webpage, the upmarket ones mention larders and pantries or shortening shelves. One of the deVOL brochure pages says “an iconic image that just might have changed the face of all kitchens that followed”. About a kitchen in Peckham Rye. They clearly spend a lot on marketing to attract a specific customer, I don’t think I’m it though I like their design approach.

Thanks @Iwantascone , even Plain English has some mention of it. I don’t think my microwave is ugly either lol. I know about all the different options for microwave placement, I’m just wondering if deVOL are designers who deal with it sensibly if I went to them. Most of the houses I’ve seen with kitchens like theirs have a period kitchen, then a very small one to the side with everything and where the dog sleeps. But they do have two London show rooms.

I have a deVOL kitchen and the microwave is in a larder cupboard in the main kitchen, it was designed to fit the microwave and there are loads of plugs inside. Also have the internet stuff in there too.

KitchenEtta · 01/09/2024 09:12

Thanks @limpingparrot ! Would you recommend them and their design service? Did you use them as installers? If we did a small kitchen like their Stepney one, it would be in our budget and I’d love it. www.devolkitchens.co.uk/kitchens/shaker-kitchen/stepney-townhouse

I'm sure you've already factored in that you could be almost tripling the £9k listed cost of those Stepney cupboards by the time you add in the following:

Please note.
The total cupboard cost shown excludes worktops, appliances, accessories, delivery and installation, which all make up substantial additional costs when renovating a kitchen.

KitchenEtta · 01/09/2024 13:30

Yes I understand what “cupboard costs only” means. I’m really only interested in people’s experience of deVOL design on this thread. I’ve read tons of threads already and have been to DIY Kitchens, Howdens etc. Maybe I should have put the thread title as “who’s got a devol kitchen” but I’ve seen loads of those threads too and the replies are mostly about deVOL look by other suppliers. I can’t get quite what I want from the other kitchen suppliers and I’m wondering if going to deVOL designers will achieve their look but also I need the practicality. Can’t see where the microwave is in the Stepney kitchen!

deVOL tend to hide them in cupboards. IKEA do the same.

Microwaves are allegedly becoming less common, so will feature in fewer kitchen designs. We haven’t had one for a few years, and don’t miss it, but most designers can accommodate them and deVOL definitely can. They will also redesign to have it outside of a cupboard if you’re a frequent user (because the cupboard will warp if you use it often, according to the designer we had).

KitchenEtta · 01/09/2024 13:49

That’s really helpful and interesting @YouveGotAFastCar , thank you. We actually never had a microwave but everyone told us to get one when we had the baby for sterilising and weaning. Baby never took to bottle anyway. However I use it every morning now to heat my weetabix and milk now. Just had it cold before.

We're going to put ours in our utility. Is that an option?

KitchenEtta · 03/09/2024 14:02

They just posted a photo with a microwave showing in it! www.instagram.com/p/C_dGTTPIydP/ Wonder if it was this post? I had googled and they only ever mention a microwave in a kitchen post, no photo, and I’d been through so many of the photos on instagram already before asking here.

Often one of the built in ovens is a multi-function one with microwave included. I can't imagine living without one and have just been sketching out a little slide and hide door to conceal one in a bigger unit.

sweetsardineface · 25/09/2024 09:01

We have a Devol kitchen and really recommend them. Their designers were so imaginative and helpful and the quality is great. Our microwave is on an open shelf unit that’s sort of tucked into a corner so can’t be seen unless you’re standing in front of it. I didn’t want loads of stuff on the worktops so this works v well for me.

Soonenough · 25/09/2024 09:05

Sorry but you can achieve that look with a B&Q designer. 🤣

Peony15 · 25/09/2024 09:16

I like DeVol ( and Plain English ). However was shocked by their absolutely terrible design for 2 victorian houses. Many high end kitchen companies employ people with a design/architect background which made it even more shocking.
In the end I designed kitchens myself abd had them handbuilt.
Microwave is inside a big larder cupboard in one, in other above fridge behind doors as rarely used.
