Removing LED strip light foamy tape from walls - HELP!

Habbyhadno · 30/08/2024 10:39

I've just moved into a new property and the previous owner had LED strip lights along the wall near the ceiling. They have left the foamy tape stuck to the wall and I cannot for the life of me get it off.

Can anyone help with removal tips please? Pic for a visual of the situation Confused

Sticky Stuff remover spray

Dealing with the same issue and the cleaners recommended WD40 to avoid damaging the wall. Haven’t tried it yet but will this weekend.

Ok, so I started with WD40 which did nothing, then I read online and they said not to use anything oil based as you can't paint over it.
Currently heating with hairdryer then carefully pushing along it with my finger to make sure all the adhesive comes off. It's laborious but seems to be working. Will take me all day at this rate though.

Maybe try some white spirit

Hairdryer and a blunt knife (or ideally some sort of plastic blade, like from a Playdoh set) to scrape rather than your fingers

White spirit or nail varnish remove may dissolve the glue ( or HG may do a specialist remover). Sugar soap might help as well. The scraping thing takes ages and you can damage the wall as well.

Thanks all. White spirit and a plastic ruler has worked well, apart from the smell.

Acetone or nail varnish remover for tape glue. Be careful, it can remove paint.
You can remove the white spirit oily traces with rubbing alcohol.

Nail varnish remover with acetone

As the first reply - Sticky Stuff Remover, it's the name of a product. It's absolute genius.

Habbyhadno · 01/09/2024 20:22

Tried Sticky Stuff Remover and it didn't work, just made it more sticky and gloopy.

I think I've managed to get it all off. The only thing that worked was scraping the foam layer off with a kids plastic ruler and then white spirit on the adhesive, and rub it alternately with the white spirit cloth then a dry cloth for ages until it clears all the glue off.

Apparently if the lights are still attached heat it with a hairdryer and then slowly pull it off as the glue melts underneath - wish I'd read that first before ripping them off and then dealing with the consequences.
