Sell chain free and go into rented Or sell and join a chain?

So we’re thinking of listing our house. It’s a large 4 bed Victorian £750,000.East Sussex
I would imagine there could be a few in the chain before it gets to us. We will be downsizing to something a bit cheaper/smaller. We have no mortgage.
Do we go the normal route and search for a house to buy once we have an offer?
or do we go into rented, if we go into rented do we find somewhere to rent when we list it or find somewhere to rent as soon as we exchange? Or will that be leaving it too late?

I personally would try to sell and be willing to go into rented as it just makes things so much easier.
Of course there are downsides. Renting is not cheap, you don't know how long you will be there and there could well be storage costs if your rented accommodation is smaller than your house.

When we last moved we moved into my late parents house and it took (almost) all the worry about dates out of the equation making us much more flexible.

When I sold my last house I went into a rented apartment which worked really well. But I didn't move until we were nearly at exchange. In my city rented accommodation comes and goes quickly so you will find something. I viewed the apartment, sorted references and moved in 2 weeks .
