Where to rent SE of London for commute and greenery/space?!

Hello
My partner and I are hoping to move in together, renting somewhere that is a happy medium between where he is now and where I am.
He is near Robertsbridge, I live in Beckenham. I commute to work in the Holborn/Fleet street area twice a week. So SE of London.
We both love where he is now for it’s countryside space and views but I don’t want anything more than an hour on the train commute wise. By the time you add on getting to and from the station either side I think that would be my limit.
I’ve been in London for years so I think being too far out in the sticks would be too much of a change.
He isn’t keen on being anywhere too suburby, where we have a little patch of space – and I would also miss his space/view of his current place.
We also have a pet which limits things and means we need a garden.
Neither of us know the areas that fall in between us and we’ve done several visits to different places but it is hard to get a feel for it on a day trip. So any people who live in any of these areas or have views on them. There also isn’t much on the rental market!Don’t think we want to be inside the m25 – that feels too close to London for OH.
Possible options:
trainline out of charing x – Sevenoaks/Tunbridge wells,
Didn’t love paddock wood or Tonbridge- they felt a bit rough?
Or there’s the Edenbridge – hever- crowbrough line
Or towards haywards heath?
Oxted would be quite nice but nothing is coming up there in our price range
We went to look at a place in chiddingstone and cowden but there didn’t seem to be much there?
I think if I wasn’t in a town, I’d need at least a fairly full high street…😩

What is your budget? Some.of these areas, like TW oe Sevenoaks, are pricier than they seem.

Interesting what you day about Tonbridge- what made you feel unsafe? It actually has a somewhat genteel reputation... e.g. https://www.mylondon.news/lifestyle/travel/super-posh-town-29-miles-27784469
