Mysterious smell in one corner of house

Hi, but if a strange one but thought it was worth asking as driving me mad.

For about a week we have had a really awful smell in one part of the house - a corner of a dining room downstairs but you can smell it as you descend the stairs too almost like it’s coming from a few levels but all from the same corner if that makes sense?

It smells like rotting cheese! Just worried in case it’s something major or if it’s a dead mouse do you just leave it (🤢) it’s a Victorian terrace.

Sorry would help if I asked a question!

Has anyone had this before? What did it turn out to be?

As a veteran of several well hidden dead mice, it goes in about a week.

Ugh ok thank you! 👃

On googling some people say it can be wiring melting! That’s scared me a bit, anyone heard of that before - cheese smell from wires melting?!

We had this and it was a dead mouse. Luckily ours was in an old trap so could be disposed of rather than left to decompose naturally as the HV was due to visit that week!

Have you got a plant nearby? Last week I worked out that the dead body smell was coming from old stagnant water in the bottom of my rubber plant. Was seriously 🤢

DogrosesinMay · 18/08/2024 13:11

@MissNowt Yeah I’ve checked the plants! I might check again but last time I looked all okay, I know what you mean if overwatered they can pong can’t they!

Cleaning the fridge as well today, wasn’t too bad just a solo grape RIP at the bottom!

Ugh, got do desperate I rubbed fabric conditioner on my nose 👃

DogrosesinMay · 18/08/2024 13:13

Actually looking at it it’s right under where the bath is. Maybe it’s a drain/pipe problem.

We had a horrible, unidentified, vaguely fishy smell. I suddenly remembered that electrical faults can smell weird and horrible, so I spent ages nosing around plug sockets etc. Eventually traced it to a ceiling light fitting, having traipsed round going up and down a stepladder. The wiring casing had melted and the whole thing was boiling hot Shock Probably could have caused a fire!

Oh no! Good job you found it, scary! @AllProperTeaIsTheft This is more cheesy than fishy! 🤢
