How would you decorate this room?

CoffeeIsBetterThanTea · 06/08/2024 18:50

Hi, I’d like to make this room feel a bit more cozy/homely sort of like the ikea adverts; Scandinavian with a ‘I could get cozy here and fall asleep’ feeling. I would really appreciate some advice on something I could easily (and relatively cheaply) do, such a painting/wallpapering a wall or adding a new blanket, curtains or something… annoyingly the grey steps have to stay for said perched dog Grin

Thank you for any advice

It needs more warm wood tones and plants to offset all the grey. I would replace the ceiling pendant with something wicker or wood-toned, maybe a wooden slatted blind instead of what’s there, and move the TV to the far wall, on a simple, low wooden tv stand/low cupboard. Warm neutral cushions, a big green plant in a nice ceramic pot on the ground.

You need colour, texture and lighting.

Yellows, reds, greens, oranges in the form of cushions, lampshades, rugs, throws, wall covering.

You also have too much white wall exposed, and not enough soft down-lighting (ie table lamps).

You also need plants. It looks like a bright enough room, so you have a wide choice of durable and low-maintenance plants (cat friendly too!).

You have warm wood tones, so I don't think it will take much. Good bones and all that!

It’s a nice room but I agree with the above - too much white wall. If you feel like a revamp then I would be looking at wallpaper samples and paint colours for the room. Otherwise colourful throws and more colourful prints on the wall would help. There’s a lot of grey going on as well as the white. You could look at moving some of the pics and getting some floating shelves with some interesting colourful ornaments and frames on

Embrace colour. We have grey sofa with dark red walls (valspar Dante’s cardigan) and champagne velvet feel curtains from next which fall to the floor and drape beautifully. Overhead lights are on hue so almost always dimmed with about 6 lamps in different combinations. White furniture including bookcase you can see the wall through which is lovely.
Very pale pink bureau with a monstera and lamp

It’s the coziest room and because it’s full of light through windows the dark colour is brillliant. Highly recommend their dead flat as the red is different shades depending on light where you look

All of what Bastide has said.

Perhaps a new rug in a warmer earthy palette. Sisal or jute? If the tub chair is IKEA you can get new covers for them for about £40 maybe a new one in cream or green.

New cushions in a earth palette. Consider textures like corduroy, boucle or sheepskin. Dunelm, John Lewis, Habitat do nice ones or could you make some? Fabric by the metre at Dunelem and IKEA in Skandi patterns.

Keep the walls white. Avoid grey as it's cold.

Do you look at Pinterest? There are some lovely ideas one there. Make yourself a mood board. Search for Scandinavian interiors and look at Scandanvian and Danish interiors magazines too.

If you can't afford to replace the tv stand yet you could paint the existing one. Also moved it out of the corner. Introduce some softer lighting with floor lights.

You have the basics there already in the room, the lovely wood floor and door and the grey sofa - it just needs an extra bit of colour, plants and texture.

Thank you all so much - fantastic advice, I have a low tv unit that can go under the pictures to the left of the sofa so will try and have a move around tomorrow/Thursday.

If I wallpaper the wall with the square pictures on (that wall is currently timeless by dulux and the other walls are natural calico by dulux, a more creamy colour) do you think one of these could work?

I will head to tk max / dunelm next week for some new cushions etc too, thank you so much for all the advice so farSmile

If you look at Scandinavian living rooms on pinterest they all have lots of plants, green and slightly warmer wood. So I'd look at adding plants, adding a rug with warmer tones. I'd change the pictures for something larger and abstract. Change the light shade, add some cosy lamps/candles.

This room is really nice.

I would NOT have one feature wall with wallpaper if you want a Skandi look. White walls are fine but have more pictures and more colour in all the other elements - curtains and cushions etc.

can you add a narrow console table on the wall below the 3 pictures and then have a big vase of flowers there?

Onasingleincome · 06/08/2024 22:44

It needs stuff. Homes have stuff in them.

KeepinOn · 07/08/2024 07:34

I wouldn't get pale walls, op, they would blend too much into the flooring. Go for something with a darker hue. I'm quite fond of the mis-match of picture sizes and frames look, too.

Some of the pictures on here might not be to your taste, but they show the dark walls with lighter furniture and wooden flooring can work well. 6 Best Dark Dramatic Living Room Ideas - Decoholic

Can you move the steps for the Georgeous one to the other end is the sofa so they run along the wall up to the sofa?

Section21MyArse · 07/08/2024 14:56

I think the wallpaper is a bit William Morris in style and not Skandi, it looks too English country house. Keep the walls plain in white /Timeless/ Calico. How about putting all the pictures on one wall together in one arrangement above the sofa. Skandi style relies on simplicity and a calm palette.

What strikes me about your living room (aside from the lovely light it gets), is that you have a lot of different wood tones.

So, if I didn't have a tonne of cash to spare I'd start small -

  1. keep your rug and use it as the primary room colour, working with complementary colours in the rest of your colour scheme (blue/rust tones for example).
  2. reframe all the wall art in a light oak frame (speaking the same language as door/floor) and edit where the images are placed.
  3. change out the light fitting for something scandi inspired
  4. change out your curtains for something light and patterned that links in your colour scheme (e.g.rust, navy and warm grey).
  5. add some fresh cushion covers/throw blankets
  6. Plants, low lighting

If I had some cash to spare I'd buy a new tv unit/sideboard with a more scandi vibe. If not, and if I had room, I'd reorientate what I already have so it's not in the corner.

I would add plaster pink, green and natural woods shades into the room. I’d paint all the walls a warm, pale pink which will make the light nicer and still sit well against the grey and black.
I’d change out the light for a natural wicker or wood shade
On the sofa and chair, I’d add cushions and maybe a throw / blanket in greens, pinks and complementary colours with lots of texture - and definitely pattern, which is what the room really needs.
I think the rug isn’t bringing anything helpful - I’d be tempted to swap it for something with more texture and colour.
And then you need at least one big table lamp with a decent size shade, and two or three largish plants.
Combined that would give you warmth, visual interest and would help offset all the grey and white which is feeling really cold.

Some things that might work (not necessarily all together)

Thank you all so much for your tips and advice, it has been so incredibly helpful, and I’m honestly feeling so much more happier with how it’s looking and feeling Smile. I am eternally grateful for all of your support and tips.

After quite a difficult year it’s so nice to just feel ‘at home’, and like I can relax and unwind after a difficult day at work.

This is where I’m at so far (I’m returning the rug for the next size up) I’ve also included a photo with the old rug for comparison.

I have a circle warm orange light from ikea to put on the wall and would like to change the blue throws out (will have a look at in max this week Grin)

thank you all Flowers

This room is very similar to ours. We have some yellow and a half wall of scandi style panelling at the end I can’t see on your photos (we have a small dining table against ours)
