Ceiling fans

My DS is in the box room and it's always hot and stuffy. He currently has a fan on in his room, door open and another fan on in the hallway facing him! Do ceiling fans actually cool the room down? Im after a smart one that I can use on an app or set a timer for. If you have any recommendations, let me know!!

I love ceiling fans.

Placemarking for advice from anyone who has fitted one. My place is a heat box 😅

We have then. Opted not to have smart ones because

Remote getting lost by teens
Batteries
More chance of break down

We have lovely pull cord ones (bought little tags for them in the shape of a light bulb and a fan to make it clear) - fairly basic ones from Argos and posh ones from a lighting store

Ceiling fans are great if they are placed so you can stand/sit under them. We are in the southern US and have no AC (we live in a mountainous area in an old home built before it was standard) and they really do work to move the air around and make you feel cooler. No experience of smart ones, I'm afraid. The basic models are not hard for an electrician to fit.

Also in the US and yes they make a difference, another tip learned from my FIL is to put a fan at the bottom of the stairs angled up, pushes the cooler air downstairs upwards

I grew up in a country with v hot summers. We didn't have a/c, but we did have ceiling fans and box fans. Ceiling fans were great at keeping the air moving, and box fans were often put in an open window, sucking the air out of the room. So the hot air was circulated and then evacuated. In the evening you'd turn the box fan around so cool air was blown in.

I live in southern Portugal, we have a huge ceiling fan in the living room and it’s brilliant - much better than a pedestal fan. The bigger the fan, the quieter and more efficient they are. Ours has a 40w DC motor and is virtually silent, costs next to nothing to run compared with the AC in the bedrooms. We’re going to have wiring put in to install them in the bedrooms too.

If you have wiring in the ceiling already, installation is an easy DIY job - same as changing a light fitting.

I've got them in 2 of my bedrooms and they are fab. In the heatwave you still need to lose the duvet but they are amazing and l am replacing them with remote controlled ones.

This is amazing, thank you!! Will look in to the recommendations. Good to know they work well!
