Seller won’t give a completion date

we are currently buying a house and our solicitors asked us for a preferred completion date. The sellers rejected our proposed date and said that date was too soon for them but have not given a counter date? It’s been over a week since we gave a proposed date and have been on to our solicitors to get them to chase the sellers to give a date for over a week. Is this unusual for a seller to do this? Not giving a counter date and just saying “that date doesn’t work for us” seems a bit like a red flag to me

It does sound a little odd and very unhelpful.
At least if they said the following week/month/3-months etc you would know what you were looking at.
Press your solicitor/EA to keep talking.

It may be that they are more experienced than you and know it’s too soon to agree a completion date. Unless you are close to Exchange of Contracts?
