Removing the name of a former coresident who can't be contacted from a utility bill

If I had a friend (but not otherwise in any relationship with me) who was living with me without paying rent for some months and we both agreed to add his name as an additional name to mine on one of the utility bills, but when he left and moved abroad I forgot to ask him to contact the utility company jointly with me so that we could remove it; and if I'm the sole homeowner but I can't now contact him so we can jointly remove his name in the normal way (which as far as I understand it - but correct me if I'm wrong - usually seems to require both named individuals to contact the utility company), would there be any alternative legal and proper way to remove it? Also, assuming I was the sole homeowner, might I face any difficulty in completing on any future sale of the property if I wasn't able to remove his name. Might the buyer's solicitor have a problem with there being another name in addition to mine on one of the utility bills?

Have you tried? Utilities don't give a fig as long as they get paid.

Call them and say 'has moved out, I'm fully responsible for the bill', they'll update.
