Car port roof - asbestos

I have been asking around for recommendations for companies to remove the roof of our car port. We know it contains a low level of asbestos because we had it tested. The roof is made up of a few overlapping sheets.
All of the companies we talk to say to just do it ourselves with decent PPE. Double bag it and take it to the tip.
Is this a reasonable idea? Or a terrible one?!

@Diyextension because it's likely bits will break or crumble off. If someone who doesn't know what they're doing bags it in the wrong stuff or contaminates the outer bag, it can get in the boot. We had ours professionally removed, and there were still broken bits, small bits etc. It's not fair to offload the problem to a hire car. Line your own car boot with plastic

Like I said hysteria.

I wonder how many people have ever contracted asbestosis from a hire car. …… I’ll have a wild guess, none

I'm really sorry for those that have lost family members to asbestos related cancers @Doggymummar and @ScrummyDiva2

@leeverarch There is quite a cavalier approach on here though. I’m surprised.

Asbestos is a naturally occurring material. It’s naturally present in the air/soil etc. According to the Australian gov we can breathe up to 5000 fibres of the stuff a day just naturally in the air. 😬Never knew that!

😮😮😮 NOOOOOO!!!!

No. You really don't want to do that.

Please contact a specialist firm that deals with asbestos removal - ordinary builders won't want to do it.

They can, and do, and you can do it yourself with appropriate PPE and disposal. So many people read the word asbestos and panic.

TizerorFizz · 30/07/2024 23:21

They can. However it’s what you feel comfortable with and level of expertise. There’s a lot of advice to follow and not everyone could do it. Hence expert help is better for many.
