Remove fireplace?

We have a gas fire that we never use. Thinking of removing it and just getting it plastered so we can put shelves/ books in it.

Don’t want a wood burner. Is there any other reason we shouldn’t do this or haven’t considered? Has anyone done this a regretted it? Is there anything we should look out for? Is it expensive?

A friends house has a small hole left in his and it’s always dropping soot. He’s not sure why the hole was left as it was already done when he bought the house. is there a reason for this or is it just a bad job?

thanks

You need to leave a small hole for ventilation otherwisw the chimney can get damp and cause issues but it can just be a slide vent thing that you can close if needed.
