Converting cellar to cinema room

Hello All,

I am planning to convert the below cellar to entertainment room (TV room). The previous owner had got all the work done in terms of electrical points, lights, heater, exhaust fan for ventilation etc. Any suggestions/ideas/advice please.

What commitment levels are you going for? Is it going to be a pure cinema room or will it have other uses?

No just a cinema room.

Things to think about are:

  • projector or TV. We have a projector and while they can be a bit fiddly to set up I like the massive picture and the atmosphere of it
  • making the room as dark as possible. Make sure that any windows are completely blacked out and dark walls help too.
  • what soundsystem you're going for. You'll definitely need something as built in sound is so rubbish, but different set ups have different needs (e.g. Dolby Atmos has speakers in the ceiling)
  • budget. It's one of those things that can be done at a reasonable budget or costs can spiral.

Avforums.com is a UK site with a home cinema forum where you'll see lots of examples of what people have. The people are also really helpful if you need any advice. I tend to buy from Richer Sounds, and the people who work there tend to be pretty knowledgeable.

Thanks Merrow for your advice, this definitely helps.

I converted a room into a cinema room. After a few months it was never used as a cinema room. Glad I didn’t spend big money.

Yeah, I expect it depends what else you have in the house. If we just kept ours for watching films then it would see limited use, but because we don't have any other TV it's used a lot. It is bizarre watching something like MasterChef on the big screen, but you adapt remarkably quickly!

Do you have children/ teens? If so I’d make it into a games room with screen/gaming area.

Yes I do have teens. I was hoping to
Convert it to a living + cinema room. The only issue being the ceiling height in around 6 foot.
