Moved into a rental with damp in cupboards

Hello,

we recently moved into a rental. We couldn’t really be choosy, our lease was coming to an end- we also moved cross country and had limited time to see properties. When we viewed this one it had recently been cleaned and I didn’t exactly notice the smell. The house sat empty for a while and then come move in day I notice it.

there’s a cloakroom cupboard by the door- noticeable mould spores and stinks of damp. I’ve left our coats in boxes but how long for.

under the stairs was made toy storage - I could smell the damp. Everyone (family) was like no it’s hardly there. Opening the door makes me feel ill- I am pregnant so heightened smell but it’s just wafting. Damp in the corner.

the upstairs airing cupboard no noticeable damp but open the door you can smell it.

every cupboard. Every door. There’s no noticeable sign for damp. And it’s a full rental. We have signed a year.

how do I get rid of damp when I don’t own the house and it’s all listed on the inventory so therefore it was there on move in and not new so they won’t do anything

im also heavily pregnant so limited on bleach use and we have a toddler in the house

Hi OP. So sorry to hear this. It’s so stressful isn’t it. Have you considered using a dehumidifier(s)?
Cleaning strength white vinegar can be useful for cleaning the mould spores if you can’t use bleach, but you would still need to keep the damp areas dry so I would highly recommend using in conjunction with dehu.
I would also inform the agency or landlord of the situation. Even if they do nothing (which was what happened to us) you at least have evidenced that it was a pre-existing issue and not due to your lifestyle (a friend was blamed by landlord for the pre-existing damp issue for leaving damp towels on the towel rail 😡)
