Dispute with neighbour over a fence

So recently the council has bought the house next door to ours and we have been having some issues with the tenant. She makes us very uncomfortable, and we have already raised complaints about her behaviour and nothing is getting done. Our yard isn't very private as our back doors face each other and yards are only separated by a waist high wall, and every time we step into the yard she comes out and we have no privacy.

So we have put a 6ft foot wooden fence from our house down to the bottom of the yard in order to give us more privacy (and to stop our cat jumping on the wall as she complained about that) we fully own the property we live in and we made sure the fence was no higher than 2m and is on our property (by checking our deeds)

She came out shouting and swearing, complaining about the fence and saying its blocking her sun and i was just wondering can the council actually do anything as its on our property and no higher than 2m? We didn't get planning permission as when we did our research we found you dont need it as long as its under 2m and on our property, it's made of wood and its on our backyard where there is no road/cars.

Thanks in advance

She can't do anything legally you're fine.

Andwegoroundagain · 03/07/2024 08:15

Yep a 2m fence is fine so ignore her

She can't do anything from what you have said it sounds like it's all within regulation.
If she really starts becoming a bit of a pest start making records of everything to show the council for a formal complaint.

Just start doing this now anyway, annoy the council constantly about her and don’t give up.

Planning regulations vary from area to area but generally if it is under 2m in a back garden then you are generally fine.

For people doing this though I would recommend you make the fence with the panels easy to remove. That way you can access your side of the wall for maintenance easily and be able to remove stuff that falls in the gap.

Sadly I doubt whether this will be the end of it. She sounds batshit and will probably move to start harassing you in some other way. Make sure you keep a log of everything she does and complains about and save any communications you have with/from her.

@loropianalover @bbluebee17

We have been keeping records for months and have already made a formal complaint to the council but nothing is getting done, hence why the fence is up now, im continuing to email them every week as the issues are constant!

Thanks for all the replies!

She can't do anything - let her go and moan to the Council - the sooner they get the measure of her the better.
