Right now my house is being packed up

I'm trying to distract myself because I'm ever so anxious about it all. Completion is tomorrow so they're packing everything up today and the furniture tomorrow morning.

Please tell me about times you used packers and it was absolutely great and wonderful.

Just remember that they do this every single day. It’s a huge deal for you but absolutely routine for them. I’ve always used packers, and apart from some very minor issues, it’s always been fine. Enjoy your new home!

NotQuiteUsual · 02/07/2024 13:33

Yea you're right. This is just everyday for them. I don't know why I'm so nervous. It's been a long process with so many delays, so I'm on guard waiting for the next problem.

Put anything you don't want packed in your car or another space the packers don't have access to NOW.

They will pack randomly so if you 'lose' something it will probably turn up in a random box from another room.

I've had packers four times. It's a fabulous service. As pp said they move at the speed of light. One time I was working, went downstairs to answer a question and returned upstairs to find my laptop had had the lid closed, cable unplugged and was in a box!

NotQuiteUsual · 02/07/2024 13:42

We've got out overnight bag and personal bits we don't want them touching in the car safe. It's all gone quiet up there so assume they're taking a break. I have cans of pop in the fridge for them so hopefully, they're having a drink.

They've done all of upstairs and are working on the kitchen. That's all they're doing today as it's taken them less time than they thought it would.

Moving is so stressful and you are in the thick of it. Packers are professional and know what they are doing. You can honestly trust them.
It actually is pleasant watching them do their job so efficiently! But you are perfectly normal to be a bit anxious.
All your worldly belongings are being regrouped, compacted and displaced so your reaction is perfectly normal.

Tomorrow will be more of the same with your furniture. They work at lightening speed ! It simply seems amazing that your life can be boxed up and fits in in a truck! It reminds me each time how fragile our lives are.

I wish you a safe and uneventful move, OP. Don't forget to tip your hero movers. They are amazing people! Strong, attentive, careful and efficient!

My father in law had a removal company and just loved it. He really enjoyed moving people gently and calmly but efficiently too. Definitely worth getting professionals in!

Twiglets1 · 02/07/2024 16:04

Packers are wonderful and well worth the additional cost

summeroccupation · 02/07/2024 16:08

Empty your bins or they'll pack them full of rubbish!

It's nearly 30 years since we moved and I hope never to have to do it again. We had two very small children on that occasion and the money spent on packers was an absolute godsend. They were brilliant. No faffing around thinking 'Oh that's where that went! How did it get there?' or 'Oh, I'd forgotten about this. I'll just have a good look at it', which is what would have happened if we'd done the packing ourselves. They were also very good at packing and we had only one breakage, which they noticed before we did it. The head honcho told us that the glass on a picture frame had cracked and he would get it replaced and returned to us, which he did, very promptly (and obviously he paid for it, or his insurance did). They were utterly marvellous.

Good luck for tomorrow!

Best money I ever spent! All boxes well packed, labelled and delivered to the correct rooms in our new house.

I'm never doing my own house move packing again.

WallaceinAnderland · 02/07/2024 16:15

This sounds wonderful, I'm definitely doing this next time.

OP do you have or can you borrow camping chairs that you can stick in the car boot. Very useful when you've got no furniture left. Also I asked for the vacuum cleaner to be packed last so I could do a quick run around behind them before it went.

zingally · 02/07/2024 16:18

Just out of interest, and don't answer if it's too personal, but how much did you pay for the packing service?

I'm nearing the "organising that" stage of my own house move, and want to decide if it's financially worth it.

You can ask removal firms to give you 2 quotes- one with the packing service and one without.

We have found it only adds a few hundred but I expect every case is different

Pipsquiggle · 02/07/2024 16:23

When we moved 8 years ago, paying for packers was the best decision we made. They achieved more in 4 hours than I did in 4 weeks. They were lovely. I can't recall anything being damaged - they know what they are doing

Flubadubba · 02/07/2024 16:25

Yep! Used packers last move and it was fantastic. Less stress, no breakage and beautifully labelled.

Highly recommend!

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 02/07/2024 16:29

Loved having packers! They were so fast! just over half a day to pack up the house, next day about 2hrs to load the vans inc the garden stuff as they loaded most things in whole (dresser/dining table etc) the disassembled and then reassembled the beds very quickly. Amazing how fast they can work. Legends.

We last moved 3 years ago and packing was £500 on top of the move.

It was the best £500 we spent, as you really see and feel the benefit. Unlike all the other fees and stamp duty etc.

Scissor · 02/07/2024 20:02

Used packers when pregnant with my 3rd and 2 under 3.
Best money I've ever spent.
They very carefully wrapped and packed my breast pump that I'd left in the kitchen 🤣
