Relocating to Cirencester... or other suggestions

We need to be somewhere we can access M5 and West Cheltenham. We sadly don't have the budget needed for that area for what we're looking for (3/4 bed detached, £750k) so we're trying to consider other options. We don't want a new build, which I know is where our budget falls.

Firstly, is Cirencester a lovely place to live? I've only been a couple of times, but it looks nice. I don't think we'd like Stroud, but I have seen Nailsworth recommended but there's just nothing on the market at the moment.

We have seen a house online which doesn't fit our requirements (Victorian terrace with tiered garden) but maybe we need to be more flexible. Can anyone tell me anything about Stratton, Cirencester as a place to live?

Would welcome any suggestions at all. We don't need schools.

I don’t live in Cirencester but I think it is lovely. Friends live there, and they absolutely love it. You could also look at Wotton under Edge or even Cricklade (not a town if that is your preference). I have not been to Stratton so no idea what that is like.

Cirencester is lovely, park walks near centre. It's quite expensive for eating out if that's your thing.

Have you ever visited Stroud? It's a bit hilly, but with that you're surrounded by hill views, there's a good number of practical shops, nice pubs, lots of cafes, market day has a much better atmosphere there than Cirencester. Bus service is better than Cirencester if you've got DC who might want to go further afield.

Nailsworth is nice enough, but it's centre is a sort of drive through place and not as many shops as above - there is a medium sized supermarket though. If you've got a family, I think there would be more on offer at the above options.

We'd consider anything really - initially, we were looking for something pretty remote, but there's so little coming on the market that we're just open to anything at all. I like Cricklade.

Cirencester is fab. But maybe think of somewhere slightly further south such as Malmesbury?

IPartridge · 27/06/2024 20:04

I think Nailsworth is really nice (to visit, I don't have experience of living there)

There are several on the market under your budget

Cirencester and Cricklade are quite a bit further from the M5

I could possibly do modern if it was an individually built new home but not something like that, I'm afraid.

Yes, it's a loose want. We wouldn't need it too regularly, but going over into Oxfordshire would probably be too far.

Yep - it's in the search area too.

While Stroud itself might not appeal so much, there are some lovely properties and villages around it. Worth checking out as M5 access is great and you also have trains to Cheltenham and London. Stroud has more amenities than Cirencester too.

Cirencester is lovely and easy access to the A419 to either the M5 or M4. Fairford or Kempsford would be in that area too. Or South Cerney.

Cricklade is a town

Barely! It has a population of 4000, and one primary school (no secondary schools). It’s smaller than the village I grew up in. Stroud is three times the size, Cirencester is five times the size, and neither of those are massive conurbations.

That’s as maybe but it’s still a town. There is also a private school that covers primary and part of secondary school years. It’s not a large town but it is still a town.

I wouldn't say Cirencester is convenient at all if you need to regularly get to the west of Cheltenham - can you give any more detail about where you need to get to etc?

Probably only need to go to Cheltenham once each week at the most.

I like that Kemble station is just over an hour to London too - will likely use that a couple of times per month.
