Has anybody got any idea what sort of waste trap this is? I am trying to work out how to clean it.

As i can't really see any water then my best guess would be that its a dry trap, that is that it doesn't hold any water but has a neoprene seal to stop smells coming back.
As for cleaning then just an old toothbrush and flushing through but whatever you do, don't be tempted to undo those screws you can see.

We have one like that. About once a month, I pull out any hairs tangled round it (DD has very long hair) then simply put bleach all over it (not the metal bit), leave it for an hour and shower it out. If yours hasn't been cleaned for ages then you may need to use eg an old toothbrush to scrub at it a bit. We are in a hardwater area so I use Viakal to clean the metal bit.

There is water in the dark part above the pipe thing.

I was wondering about the screws 😬

Thanks - I was wondering if I could put bleach down it - I have removed some bits of hair already.

I can't work out how it works and I haven't been able to find one like it by googling.

Try one of the shower plughole hair unblockers in there eg Mr Muscle

Well it looks nice and clean now. It has had a scrub with an old toothbrush and some bathroom cleaner, and some bleach down it to get at the parts I can't reach/see.

Still none the wiser as to how it works. I have not undone the screws 😬👍. I feel I need a bit more knowledge and information before I go there.
