Hello we'd like our house to look a bit more appealing and less drab. We're getting a new garage door and will then get our front door sprayed to change the colour.

What colours should we go for, please? I'm thinking steel blue garage door and lighter blue-grey door. What do you think?

I think if I were painting the front door, I’d have to do the windows too. Blues/ blue-greys sound very similar to what you currently have?

I think something else that would make the front of your house look good is a climbing plant — a jasmine?

OurDoorz · 19/06/2024 09:38

Thank you @HoarseSoprano The current garage door colour is brown although it does appear a little blue/grey in the photo for some reason. I was wondering about the window frames and whether keeping them white but having different colour front and garage doors would be too much. I definitely think you're onto something with the climbing plant.

Doors and windows all being the same colour is a relatively recent thing. I’d go bold with cherry red for both! (I may be putting my own tastes on this as we have all grey windows and doors and I’m seriously thinking about a cherry red front door!)

I think front door and garage door in the same colour (whatever colour you decide!) always looks smart.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 19/06/2024 09:52

I like a pastel green.

OurDoorz · 19/06/2024 10:34

I wish I had the guts to go cherry red! I'll have a think about that one. I think it would look fantastic, but quite bold! That might not be a bad thing though as otherwise our house doesn't really stand out from the crowd.

I love pastel green and that's the colour I've chosen for the kitchen but DH sadly isn't a fan and I think it would be unfair to push any more green on him. And yes I suspect you're right having the front door and garage door the same colour would look best.

I'd have white garage door, retain white windows, door frames and then a good strong colour for the front door. ( You can go all out cherry red!). This accentuates your door and makes the entrance very clear. And then some planting.

OurDoorz · 19/06/2024 12:28

Strangely, DH seems to like the idea of green. What do you think of these options (please excuse the quality of the "artwork")?

Definitely the green, mainly because your bricks are a bit on the orange side and the green is the better contrast with them.
Red is too much red/orange all round and blues and greys do not work as well with the orangey tone.

Pfpppl · 19/06/2024 12:33

I like the red. I wanted red for our door and garage, but DH wasn't keen so we ended up with dark blue. I'd do the garage door red as well, rather than white.

OurDoorz · 19/06/2024 15:43

Or how about a natural wood garage door (something that goes well with the brown roof) which then gives me the option to have a lighter, brighter front door colour? Decisions, decisions 🤔

Greeny grey I think
or a wooden garage and a dark green door?

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 19/06/2024 15:58

Semi circular plant bed to the front of the 3 panel window, edged and planted with alpines, low height shrubs or lavender, covered with dark green slate. Paint the planting metal frame racing green, to match the door and garage doors. Put up an outdoor light, to the side of the front door.

zingally · 19/06/2024 16:34

My parents painted their double garage bright red, and it looked fab! It really cheered up the frontage and made the house look really friendly and welcoming. The brick was the same orangey colour as yours as well.

BrigadierEtienneGerard · 21/06/2024 20:34

I dislike doors and windows the same colour, so I'd keep the white frames.

Sage green
