Is this house too remote?

Name change. We are considering putting an offer on this house. It's exactly the style we want with more land than we wanted but I'm worried it's too far from Winchester where we started looking. To get the train station I'll need to drive, to get to the shops I'll need to drive! Does anyone do this ? Do you end up resenting the inconvenience? Also value for money?

Personally I couldn't do it, if I was going rural I'd still need some basic amenities within safe walking distance - pub, shop etc. It really looks like you couldn't walk anywhere from that house. I'm not a fan of driving everywhere though, I try to do as much as I can on foot.

Trewa · 17/06/2024 17:10

I live in rural highlands and drive for everything, it’s not really a problem for me, used to driving fairly decent distances to get to everything, the only downside for me has been medical appointments but that’s because of the distance involved that I’m guessing won’t be a problem down south.

SoupDragon · 17/06/2024 17:11

If you aren't sure about it, you shouldn't be spending over £2m on a house.

Ratfinkstinkypink · 17/06/2024 17:14

I live rurally and have to drive for everything, it has never bothered me as for me, the positives outweigh the reliance on the car.

Listress · 17/06/2024 17:19

I’m another from the Highlands and it’s not an issue for us but we’ve lived very rurally all our lives. We have to drive to get anywhere and it’s no biggie but if you’re already having doubts don’t offer. The road running along side it doesn’t look in the greatest condition though.

onemoretine · 17/06/2024 17:22

It's a beautiful house, I would wonder what's going on in the surrounding fields though because if they are being planted then the smell of fertiliser would be an issue for me to be honest

Well all property decisions are a judgement call. All factors are never perfect I guess.

Thanks I hadn't thought of that. Farm fields is all we know. Something to consider.

Yes that part won't be an issue as it's just locally isolated but a drive away from hosp etc. Thanks

How do people who live this remotely see friends? Do you just have to accept seeing them less? Or just a lot of driving?
I'd love a secluded lifestyle but this puts me off.

chimneystack · 17/06/2024 17:31

I can walk to everything from where we live so I’d hate this. But it’s very personal.

Expensive to heat those vaulted ceilings, too.

Peclet · 17/06/2024 17:36

I think that is a very noisy house with all the vaults and open upstairs landing. Couldn't do it.

I am sure there are nicer houses out there for £2m.

I drive to most places. You get used to it pretty quickly.

norfolkbroadd · 17/06/2024 17:38

Oh yassss, verrrrrry remote, at least two minutes from the M3 and virtually impossible to get a decent cold brewed oat latte within a mile radius...

Shellyleppard1 · 17/06/2024 17:40

if youget bad weather need to think about getting to the shops for essentials.....too isolated for me

Yes I guess just more planned visits. You can't just "pop" in. Hoping advantages outweigh these disadvantages

In the area I would say this is the best one we have seen. It's personal taste as well of course so maybe you wouldn't agree.

I have a friend who lives outside Winchester. She lives in the home she grew up in (moved back after her Dad died and she already had kids). Before, she lived in a small village and could walk to the school/church/pub. In her old/new house it was a car ride everywhere (with the inevitable taxi service for the kids).
I couldn't live that remote full time.

I agree it's not in the wilderness but it's more the isolation of needing to drive for almost everything . Not used to that way of life.

It doesn't look remote enough for me. Can you hear the M3?

spriots · 17/06/2024 17:46

It really depends on you and your lifestyle.

I really like city amenities, hate driving and couldn't care less about peace and quiet/countryside. So it wouldn't be for me but plenty of folk love living rurally

BraMaHaLas · 17/06/2024 17:47

As long as Waitrose and the milk man deliver its not too ritual IMO.

Interesting. I was going to say that seems very pricey for a rather dated and dark looking looking barn conversion. But then I see it was previously listed in 2021 with MUCH better photos - and furniture which also fits better. So perhaps it is better in the flesh.

BUT if you go half a mile away you get this (under offer) https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/143636738#/?channel=RES_BUY (2.5m)

OR this https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/137446436#/?channel=RES_BUY (2.8m)

Both seem to give you much more 'wow' bang for your buck.

So, yes, it seems a bit pricey. (I know the area so I am aware of the prices).

I would say no. BUT that's my older ears. Can children hear the m3... I don't know!

It looks amazing but I would worry I'd get frustrated at the lack of village pottering. Popping to a cafe, then a couple of shops and a pub. I don't even rent holiday villas that don't have that anymore. I am a proper townie though, if you're more into birdsong than bumbling around shops it could work. Is there a good taxi service?

Thank you- yes those older photos seem to reflect it more !
I agree perhaps on the other properties being more grand or imposing but it's just a personal taste thing I guess. The large land really seems amazing
