Is this house too remote?

Name change. We are considering putting an offer on this house. It's exactly the style we want with more land than we wanted but I'm worried it's too far from Winchester where we started looking. To get the train station I'll need to drive, to get to the shops I'll need to drive! Does anyone do this ? Do you end up resenting the inconvenience? Also value for money?

We’ve made a similar move from London where we had no car to a lovely large house where we drive everywhere. I don’t love driving, but I love my house and garden more than I hate relying on a car, so it is worth it to me.

The bit that I would be more worried about is the amount of land - we have similar acreage and it is way more of a hassle than I had anticipated. We now know who to call and have a bit of a routine around it, but staying on top of it all is more work than I thought, especially in the first year or two.

It looks amazing but I would worry I'd get frustrated at the lack of village pottering. Popping to a cafe, then a couple of shops and a pub. I don't even rent holiday villas that don't have that anymore. I am a proper townie though, if you're more into birdsong than bumbling around shops it could work. Is there a good taxi service?

You describe my exact feelings. No idea about taxis !

You could let most of the grass be a wildflower meadow (seek out someone to help you regenerate it) and mow paths through it. Have a neater bit close to the house.

We're in the process of buying a bungalow with an acre and that's what I plan to do.

Why do you have two threads asking exactly the same thing?

TheNoonBell · 17/06/2024 18:02

Not remote as it is walking distance to the village but that is going to be very cold in the winter. Single pane windows and EPC F.

JanglyBeads · 17/06/2024 18:04

To think this house is too remote to be feasible http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/amiibeingunreasonable/5099046-to-think-this-house-is-too-remote-to-be-feasible

I presume there aren't two posters after the remote house for sale in the Winchester area.

Maybe there are?? Exciting

@HungryHouseHunter Either you want to live rurally (not that this really is) or you do not - if driving, paying for parking and not having 1 or 5 coffee shops close by are really of interest to you then any rural property will not be for you.

To live rurally you have to accept there will be differences in how you live.

Large areas of grass can be mown with a ride on mulching mower, therefore no cuttings to worry about.

The property is a converted barn which would have been part of a farm, therefore you are always going to have other farms close by, so there will be silo's, combines working late at night, livestock noise and smells, tractors on the road etc etc - it goes back to by first point either you want to live rurally or you do not. Make your choice.

Too remote for me. I’d need a pub and a shop, I’d want to live more coastal too for that money. The surrounding fields would worry me, who owns them, what plans do they have for them. What happens when you are getting on a bit and your miles from anywhere.

Ineedanewsofa · 17/06/2024 18:08

We’ve got a smaller version of this (in a much cheaper location). Driving everywhere doesn’t bother me in the slightest, it’s worth it for the location, it is a bugger to heat, we can walk to the pub across the footpaths in the fields but only in the summer and for one week a year there is the most godawful smell from the muck spreading!
no one really pops in but we host a lot and have the space to have a) epic parties and b) people staying over.
Check your broadband speed, check taxis, check supermarket deliveries - all 3 are better in our “isolated” house than they were in suburbia.
That house is stunning btw 😍

WitchyWay · 17/06/2024 18:10

I've always wondered why people would want to live so remotely, yes you get the countryside but it soon becomes boring and you have to drive everywhere.

Nope not for me. I prefer living in large villages, you still get space and fresh air but also amenities that add a little "life" back into the week.

Also, with £2.5m, I'd assume you could get a better interior. It looks a little dark. For that money, I'd want to tick every single box on my list.

RedHelenB · 17/06/2024 18:10

Its stunning. I wouldn't pass this up, worse case scenario it's too remote for you so you move in a few years.

jackstini · 17/06/2024 18:15

I would have to check local taxis first

Driving to a shop wouldn't bother me, but not having a single pub, cafe or restaurant without walking for 30 mins+ would

In the area I would say this is the best one we have seen. It's personal taste as well of course so maybe you wouldn't agree.

So you’ve looked at several in the area even though you’re not sure if you want to live in the area? hmm

My interpretation of remote was that it's surrounded by fields with no easily accessible amenities. Different perspectives.

We started off looking at Winchester and gradually have moved further from centre of town. I don't understand what's not understandable?

Yes fully accept its not remote wilderness but it's remote enough that most trips out will need a car. A change for us.

Yes, I consider it remote too.

SpringKitten · 17/06/2024 18:30

It’s beautiful but I would just say, depending on your age think about it.

how easy is it to hire a cleaner/gardener, get an online Shopping delivery from Waitrose or Amazon or wherever.

Several friends with cancer/strokes in their later middle age were utterly screwed in rural properties as found it very difficult to hire private nursing care. One friend who became unable to drive permanently, unable to easily get taxis, became 100% dependent on spouse who dug heels in and refused to move.

I had a quick look on Rightmove and there are options that are more central, e.g

https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/147329174#/?channel=RES_BUY

This one in particular just looks a bit weird and also needs some renovation in my opinion. There are a few more central that are really good though, jusy less land.
