DP wants to move but I don’t

We are renting out of choice - has a deposit ready. I don’t so I am saving for one just incase.

We currently live in a very cramped flat. It’s always a mess and it’s a shame we can’t host people as it’s too small really.

DP wants to rent somewhere a lot bigger. He’s happy to pay for most of the rent increase. I’d be about £100 a month worse off. He’s getting a big pay rise so won’t be any worse off each month.

So what do you like about your present home that makes you want to stay?

Why don't you want to move? Is it the extra £100 a month, meaning your savings rate will be slower, or is it attachment to the current flat?

'Just in case'. That sounds like the relationship isn't solid enough to share a mortgage. Is that the issue?

Why don’t you want to move? As pps said, is the relatiinship not stable/good?

mizzmarble · 11/06/2024 09:01

I think it’s because although I’ll only be £100 worse off each month, that’s because it includes the £150 a month extra I get from a promotion. So even though I’d be earning more, I’d be saving less? So total extra rent is £250 for me.

I also don’t want to feel like I ‘owe’ DP something if he pays more? We’ve always split everything. His promotion is £500 a month extra so all of this would go on rent. He could save that for our future.

Why don't you turn it around and say you want to buy ASAP and start making it a tangible target.

If you are both saving for a deposit it makes no sense to throw away potential savings on extra rent. I would stay put if I were you and maximise savings, it will be the best for you financially.
