I grew up near Hoyland and it's pretty rough. I wouldn't want to live there. Can I ask why Hoyland?

I agree with this

Because the house is beautiful but no other reason really
Just wanted an affordable place close to Barnsley college.
I know the college is good but I wasn't that sure of the town when we visited. Some areas looked a bit deprived . The house in Hoyland is affordable and very lovely that's the only reason I thought of that area

It's got a swimming pool.

Lots of Barnsley is deprived and Hoyland is no different

What it does have though is lots of new build and some bigger more rural houses

Not much there for teens though, especially college age

The centre of Barnsley has had a lot of investment and has a lot more going on. There are several areas of Barnsley that aren't deprived, but they tend to be the villages West of the M1.

Barnsley College is ofsted outstanding but the TEF rating (teaching excellence framework) is less good with a bronze overall rating, silver student experience rating and requires improvement student outcomes rating.

I hope you don't mind that I searched some of your previous posts @needmysleep. It sounds like Penistone would fit the bill. It has a station with trains that run between Huddersfield and Sheffield via Barnsley. Penistone Grammar School (grammar in name only. It is a good state comprehensive) is the only school in the LA that has a 6th form. Another college option apart from Barnsley College is Greenhead College in Huddersfield, which is one of the best 6th form colleges in the country.

If you want to live near a station but closer to Barnsley there are stations at Silkstone Common and Dodworth.

I once accidentally went swimming at Hoyland leisure centre during a session aimed at getting kids active, what I saw going on under the water made me get out of the pool sharpish! Apart from that it's not a very exciting place for teens...

Maray1967 · 16/06/2024 00:19

Yes, Penistone is much nicer than Hoyland.

Grimethorpe fits the bill I think if you’re moving up north for a bigger cheaper house. Or Cudworth, Hemsworth.
