Asymmetrical alcoves

My living room has a fireplace and i would like to DIY alcove shelving on either side but the space on either side of the fireplace is not the same. There is a doorway on one side which is why it’s asymmetrical. Has anyone fitted asymmetrical shelving? The only image I can find on Google of this is below but not sure if it looks odd!

We have the same issue! They are different depths in our house too, just to add to the lopsidedness. I think we may put alcove units in the large side and then a freestanding sideboard of sorts in the smaller side tbh just because our alcoves are so different in size!

The example picture looks lovely though.

Lots of vucrorian fireplaces are off centre. I think it's to do with fireplaces on the back (adjoining house) being to the side. Have a search on Pinterest for victorian fire places, there are a few that come up.https://pin.it/5DQn1AYmi

I don't think it looks odd, and shortnof moving the fireplace I'm not sure it's an easy fix?

Nothing wrong with asymmetry OP. In fact it is much more interesting than perfect symmetry, which can be quite boring. So don't get stuck on that point. I suggest you take exact measurements of your space and try out different drawings of what you need and want. If you are having it built by a professional, ask their advice. They will have lots of ideas and maybe even photos of past projects. Good luck.

I guess the spaces will be asymmetric whether you build into them or not - and the examples posted so far look great!

I prefer asymmetry and would have the right-hand side cupboard as pictured with asymmetrical shelving.
