Negotiating new rental agreement in the middle of buying a house

Hi all,

Our rental contract is about to come up in August so I expect agents to write any day now to negotiate a new contract.

We’ve rented this place for two years.

Problem is, we’ve had an offer accepted on a house. We’re at the beginning of the process and so have no real idea of when exchange will take place.

What can we reasonably expect to negotiate? Obviously we can’t leave them hanging with indeterminate dates. But at the same time extending the lease outside of a three or four month window makes no sense whatsoever.

Any advice or previous experience would be much appreciated

Just ask to move onto a month-to-month rolling contract. Explain your circumstances and unless the landlord is totally unreasonable they'll be happy to just advertise the property once you have a firm move-out date.

Just ask them today it roll into a periodic tenancy so you aren’t tied in.
