Down sizing to travel more

I was wondering whether anyone has experience of down sizing to have more expendable money to travel more? I'm a teacher with a husband and 2 boys (10 and 5). We could obviously only travel in the school holidays but I feel like we can't afford to go away because of our mortgage. I love our 5 bed house but honestly I think we would also be fine in a small 3 bed. I feel like we aren't living life to the full by spending so much on a mortgage and bills but downsizing also scares me. Has anyone done this and if so what are your thoughts?

Life too short and with 4 of you why do you need a 5 bedroom house

when I was pregnant my deputy head was off on maternity and I was giving up once we had DD.

she was so jealous going I don’t know how you can afford it especially as DH earned less

But they moved from a 4 bedroom to a 5 bedroom house and had the holiday of a life time.

for us we had a tiny 2 bed but knew we could afford the mortgage and to eat and that I could have time with our DD

life’s too short, so though we haven’t done it directly as we never upsized we have some awesome holidays and our kids are our 23 and 22. Go for it.

It costs a lot to downsize, estate agents fees, solicitors fees, moving lorry, stamp duty.

Do your sums really carefully.

can you pay off some of your mortgage with what moving would cost, and then lower mortgage payments will allow more travel
