Downdraft extractors - are new models better?

I'd love to hear from anyone who has installed one of the newer models of downdraft extractors (in the last year). I'm aware they were initially not that great, but have been told they have come on a lot since they were first introduced. Is this correct? How do the newest models compare to a standard head-height extractor. Thank you!

The important thing is that it vents to outside, if your talking about the recirculating type they are a waste of money in comparison.
