Windows!

We're buying a house and due to exchange Tuesday and complete Friday (fingers crossed)

The house belonged to an older lady who looked after the house but needs a lot of work and modernisation. Upstairs has double glazed windows but downstairs is single glazed. Obviously we will be replacing this. Upstairs are your standard UVPC windows. I LOVE the Georgian style windows but I feel this could look odd with upstairs not being the same style? (We obviously don't want to replace the upstairs windows as this is pointless and a waste of money) would you stick to standard windows or get the Georgian styled ones downstairs?

It would look awful having mismatched windows. Stick to plain.

Don't mix the windows!

(Is the house 'Georgian Style' if not I wouldn't put that style of window in anyway.)

Plain windows let more light in and are easier to clean.

I would replace all the windows to be original style but double glazed. It will add value to the house. Doesn't need to be done all at once.

Check whether you have wooden frames and if so, whether you have lintels before you replace with uPVC. Some houses were built using the wooden frame as a support, which is fine, but uPVC is not know for its load bearing capability in the way wood is, so you'd need to install a lintel.

Don't ask me how I know, I just know 🤦‍♂️

Thank you guys! I just think the Georgian style have a really homely feel but I was concerned about the mismatch and it's so hard to vision it 😂

I have seen houses advertised with three different types of window and it’s really offputting. Whatever you decide to do, try to get them to match.

Good leverage to negotiate the price down though.

People don’t seem to negotiate over cosmetic stuff unless a house hasn’t been touched since 1970.

I think I'll just stick to standard windows the ones upstairs seem pretty new and the whole house needs doing (apart from the windows upstairs)

thank you for all your help!

Won't haggle? It's got to be worth 20 shekels? 😂

It's amazing isn't it? I use anything to try and negotiate the price down when buying a house. That's how the game is played.

*shameless 'Life of Brian' reference.
