Best front door paint

Our new wooden front door is coming this week! Well, it's new to us - it's from a reclamation yard. They've patched up the door and made a frame to our specifications. We will need to fit it, prime it and paint it.
What is the best front door paint to use for longevity? I think we want a really dark, almost black, aubergine colour. (Our door doesn't really get direct sunshine, so I am not too worried about fading).
Thank you 😊

I find that The One paint sold on Amazon is very good. I have painted an upvc garden door with it, south facing so exposed to the sun, and it's holding up really well. I reckon it would work even better on wood ...

Zinsser Allcoat is good.

Zinsser Allcoat is good.

Yes second this. If I recall rightly, they colour match some of the popular F&B colours too.

Just discovered Zinsser Allcoat - comes in a multude of colours and finishes matt satin or gloss - it's a dream to paint with -, self levelling is good (so brish marks are minimal). water-based, recoatable in 1 hour - so job will be done in a day - no need to prime - exceptional coverage and expected to last/guaranteed for 15 years. Can you tell - I'm a big fan!😂

Definitely not this. It takes forever to dry, I did a coat on a timber front door and popped out for an hour and came back to a big air bubble I had to pop, parts of it dried with weird little air bubbles as if it was resisting the door, poor coverage etc. There was nothing wrong with my prep. It looks nice but was not nice to work with. I'll use Zinsser next time.

Just to add to the don't buys, I found the farrow & ball exterior gloss useless. I'd sanded, primed etc, applied two coats. It started flaking/revealing bits of primers less than a year later.

Thank you all for your recommendations. I think I'll see if I can get Zinsser colour matched. I am going for a really dark aubergine colour, almost black (doesn't get direct sunshine, so not too worried about fading).

Anyone know if the Zinsser Allcoat lasts on a door which gets full sun?

Sashikocheck · 26/05/2024 07:18

Ask their tech team - they guarantee the paint for 15 years - I assume there’s some research behind that
