Combi boiler replacement

MPFG · 17/05/2024 21:24

I need to change my boiler . I have a 2 bed flat . I bought my boiler and flute and it came to £1267 in total

But the tradesman wants £4300 in total for the job. That is £3003 for the installation which takes 2 days and he doessnt even start till 10am

£1500 a day . Tried getting quoates on line but everyone just wants me address and to come straight out to house without giving a quote

Its a realtive straight forward job as it means replacing one combi boiler with another , no changing set up

What price should the labout be ...surely £1500 a day is too high

The boiler engoneer was rather aggressive when I asked and said he had ot pay vat ? He doesnt and NI but dont we all yet we dont earn £1500 a day

Not sure what to do

Also how can I get a guarantee if something goes wrong with the boiler later

That seems very high for a straightforward installation. We only paid about £3k with the boiler included a few months back. Job took a day max. (SE England).

Sounds like they might not want the job, possibly because you bought the boiler in advance.

Are they Gas Safe registered?

MPFG · 17/05/2024 21:39

Yes a gas safe registered engineer and plumber

They told me to buy the boiler ..mainly because I said Id have tot buy the boiler on a credit card as needed cash for them and dont ahve alot of money

Worried about after service...Can I insist on a guarantee or 3 year repair or someting if there are problems...What did you get for this

I so hate you have to be always careful of being ripped off by people or left high and dry

We had a new vaillant combi boiler fitted February 2022 (2 years ago). Paid £2529 including fitting. Done in 1 day. Has a 10 year guarantee so long as we have an annual service. Excellent boiler, we had this make in our previous home and so made a point of having this make again

Laughingravy · 17/05/2024 21:56

We've just had what is effectively a heating re-plumb on a 1930s three bed semi. New boiler, all bar one radiator renewed and most relocated. Took four guys two days and cost £5K - though we got two feature radiators ourselves, so around £350 on top of that. Our boiler comes with a ten year guarantee, so long as it's serviced. Your quote sounds high in comparison.

curlycurlymoo · 17/05/2024 21:59

That quote doesn't sound right at all. Get more quotes and then go from there.

MPFG · 17/05/2024 23:05

Can you let me know thso eof you who have had boilers replaced who you had it done with please

Anyone have British gas or Eon or other national services

Anyone in London

All help gratefully received

@MPFG if you arenin S London, South London Heating (based in Penge) are fab.

British Gas are usually super expensive.

Hi where abouts are you? We’ve had quotes for what sounds very similar as we also have a 3 bed semi and the quotes we’ve received have been between £12-15k!!

Ypsilanti · 18/05/2024 05:01

I paid £2,500 to have a new Ideal combi boiler installed in 2022. That was the cost of the boiler and fitting - which like yours was a straightforward replacement. I’m in London. 10 year warranty etc.

If you’re by any chance in East London send me a DM and I’ll give you the name of the local firm I used (who are great).

NonmagicMike · 18/05/2024 07:03

Logical heating and plumbing in Penge are worth a call too. Have used them a few times for things, though not a boiler. We’re south London and paid £1250 ish for labour two years ago with the boiler about the same ontop, so £2500 total. 3k is someone trying their luck for a straight forward boiler swap. Ring around and get some quotes. The fact you’ve brought the boiler rather than them isn’t going to be a factor for any local tradesmen.

realw · 18/05/2024 07:26

My DH is a gas engineer and he would charge £2- 2.5k WITH THE BOILER. Your installer takes a piss. Find someone else.
If it's straight forward swap, changing boiler doesn't take 2 days.
If you are in SE London/Kent, pm me.
There is no guarantee for job for any amount of time, but, depending on a make, boiler itself has 1-5 years' guarantee,

sakura06 · 18/05/2024 07:32

We had an Eon one last year. It was fairly complicated and involved some piping changes and removal of an immersion heater. Cost £3000 all in and took 2 days. I was really happy with the work (although they took a long time to sort out the installation and I had to keep chasing).

curlycurlymoo · 18/05/2024 07:55

You don't need to go for a company. Find local plumber.

Westfacing · 18/05/2024 08:08

I'm sorry that someone is trying to rip you off.

A couple of years ago, after asking for recommendations on MN, I went with BOXT who charged me £2,300 including the boiler! This doesn't help you but might help another woman not get ripped off.

Is there any chance that the boiler could be returned, assuming it's all in it's packaging, I wonder. Then you could go with BOXT or some other company that do installation and supply the boiler.

I'm in London - in the two subsequent annual gas inspections the engineers were from the Sutton area of south London. I'll try and find their numbers and PM you if you like.

AlwaysFreezing · 18/05/2024 08:09

We're having our boiler changed with BG next week. We have gone for a bigger capacity, we're having the system flushed (it's old!) and a special filter fitted and a hive control system. £3500. On interest free credit, just under 100 pcm for 3 years.

CandidHedgehog · 18/05/2024 08:15

I agree you need more quotes but the people wanting your address before quoting are following normal procedure.

I had my boiler replaced about 6 years ago (2 days, £3,500 including boiler and moving it to a new location) and none of the people quoting would do a quote without taking a look.

Also, who said to buy the boiler? Most fitters prefer to supply their preferred make that their fitters fit day in day out in my experience. Also, a lot of them provide interest free credit - much cheaper than a credit card.

Startingagainandagain · 18/05/2024 08:32

Doesn't sound right.

I am in Kent and I had a boiler replaced a few months ago.

The guy was a registered gas engineer and plumber. He had his assistant with him to do the job. They supplied the boiler, did a full flushing of the system and they also repaired a leaking toilet cistern on the same day and installed a new toilet push button and a new stopcock in the house.

All of that came to about £3000 and everything was done in one day.

He was recommended by another tradesperson that I previously used.

It is always best to ask for local recommendations to try to find someone reliable.

mybeesarealive · 18/05/2024 09:59

Maybe he doesn't play the flute? But on a more serious note, don't proceed with this tradesman. He sounds like a rogue trader. Ask friends for recommendations and find another plumber.

I live in south east London on the bothers with Kent

Could you DM me his name and number

I have canceled the guy I was to use with the large quote and because boiler has not been deliverd till next week I have canceled that too ..well by email so far as no one works on a Saturday so cant call...will confirm on Monday

So will look around for quotes

I know people cant give a full quote until they call out but they can give a ball park figure for a combi boiler swap with specific boiler named, flushing, thermostat, documentaion, guarantee and diposal of old boiler.

if extras are needed then they can say what the ball figure may exclude like new pipe work

I never knew the whole boiler world could be so steeped in dodgy pricing

Trades will often charge what they think they can get away with. What keeps them honest is competition and a low order book.

Find one with little competition and a book full of work and they will probably quote you sky high.

Companies like BG and BOXT although expensive do put a limit on prices.

mrssquidink · 18/05/2024 13:00

If you want another example, we had our combi boiler replaced in December. Cost £3000 and that included the price of the boiler (a Worcester Bosch one) and flushing the system. It took 2 days. I am in south west London.

Laughingravy · 19/05/2024 09:40

@coldwintersoup We are in the North Cheshire. We used a small local company who have done work for several members of DPs family. To be fair they did use quite a lot of the existing pipework but it is still pretty much whole new system with a Worcester Bosch boiler.

We're in Bromley and we used Ab Stan's Heating (based in Beckenham, but they cover a wide area) last year. They were very good and professional, have lots of positive reviews.

We had an old standard system replaced with a Worcester Bosch combi (so two tanks removed, lots of moving of piping needed, couple of days work). Wireless thermostat, all waste disposed of and left tidy, 10-year warranty registered for us and all the documentation provided in a folder. Total was £3700.

BOXT were quoting very similar, and I preferred going direct with a local company. I should think just a straight replacement would be significantly cheaper.
