Dulux Timeless or just white? East facing

We narrowed it down to Timeless, or perhaps White Cotton / Pure Brilliant White in our large open plan downstairs area.
The room is facing W and E, my only worry with using Timeless in the East part is that it seems to look quite grey.
House is a 70s build, we tend to prefer simple/modern furniture, but not the art gallery style.

Will Timeless look murky on cloudy days?
I've probably already tried all the dulux swatches 😣

I'd like to keep the chosen colour in some other rooms too, for consistency. Thanks :)

@NewspaperTaxis

Smaller manufacturers are always more money but at least you are different! There's also Edward Bulmer, Little Greene, Paint and Paper Library,Claybrook, Sanderson, Fired Earth, House of Hackney, Lick, Designers Guild etc etc. So many MN posters never consider. It's boring Dulux Timeless or white all the way on here! There's so much more to look at!

It's the more money, for something that might not be up to scratch that stops me. I know Dulux Trade will do the job in one of a million (slight exageration!) mixable colours. It's just not worth going off piste. That said, Tikurilla make lovely paint.
Edited (twice!) because I can neither type nor spell 🤦‍♀️

You see I am not sure if I am a fan of F&B shades and such, might be because I am European and white walls come as a standard. They all seem a bit 'in-between' to me, I know I know, a bit more classy and sophisticated, but I think I like the fresh Scandi look more.

White feels like a great 'clean' slate to me. I don't feel it's cold, it's just what I am used to. I've never as much as seen magnolia until I was in my twenties!!

I wonder if we could do some fun split with out U-shaped open plan, however. Decorator is coming next week to quote us, maybe he can advise too. He seems to use Dulux and something called Lick? Is that even a brand?? I hope it wouldn't make kids lick the walls!

@Islandsmeh I am pretty sure which? rated Dulux trade over F&B. Yes I am sad enough to have checked the reviews 😅

W have Timeless in one of our rooms. It looks like a white that's yellowed over time. don't like it, and will be painting over with PBW as soon as.

I agree, we made a mistake doing 2 bedrooms in Timeless and it just had a horrible tinge to it. I’ve redone one in PBW and the other is next on the list

FondOfOwls · 10/05/2024 10:09

@Jeezitneverends what aspect are the rooms?? I like Timeless on the west side more than on the east side.

OP posts:
Jeezitneverends · 10/05/2024 10:10

one north west and one due south…it didn’t look good in either

tpmumtobe · 10/05/2024 10:12

NE facing here, did all the hallways in Timeless, hated it ever since. It looks grey/grubby/manky. Re-did one room in White Cotton, love it, fresh clean without being too in your face like PBW. Can't wait to paint over all the other Timeless walls.

FondOfOwls · 10/05/2024 10:29

I think Timeless probably works in certain aspects and I like it better in older/character properties.
Might be a better idea to use something else in my modern, boxy house.
Now how do I convince DH not to use it, after we decided that we like it?
My tester page by the East window looks like manky yellow and that's what triggered my doubts! I don't even think he can tell the difference...

@tpmumtobe Is White Cotton not slightly greyish?

“I’ve changed my mind” would work! Better a minor difference of opinion needing ironed out than a room needing repainted!

CellophaneFlower · 10/05/2024 13:30

I've always gone for white cotton in a bright room where other whites look too yellow. I don't find it grey, just too stark in darker rooms.

F&B All White is white without the added brighteners that PBW has.

Lick is nice, I've seen a few people use it

Nope - it's paired with one very brightly coloured stripey wall and bright curtains so I guess more contrast than in some settings, but it's always looked fresh and clean. The Timeless in some lights almost looks a bit like pale washed out skin tone. Awful.

TizerorFizz · 10/05/2024 16:12

I think F&B is not the same product as Dulux. It wholly depends what you want . I think when brands are featured in very expensive houses, you have to take note. I don't believe many expensive paints are useless. Many are wonderful. They also have a variety of finishes which helps everyone get the right finish for their room or lifestyle.

MrsMcnulty20 · 10/05/2024 16:19

I have white cotton in west facing kitchen/dining and it looks bright, not grey at all. To be honest it just looks pretty white!

got timeless in east facing hall, looks like a slightly warmer white, wouldn’t call it murky. It is a period property though, so in the hall it’s above a dado rail and has white coving etc

FondOfOwls · 10/05/2024 18:21

I think a lot of the very expensive paints featured in the magazines are such not just because of better quality, but also the right trends!
We are not moving any time soon, and I am not very trendy as it is, so I feel happy not having the newest, trendiest wall colours.

TBH even the magnolia doesn't look too bad, I'd just like something fresher and less yellowy.
I really liked Jasmine White in a few rooms but for some reason it looks a bit green on the wall (not on the paper swatch!).

I painted a few more bigger swatches on the wall, DH is just rolling his eyes at me, as 'white is white'!

A lot of the expensive paints are in magazines because they pay to be featured.

Don’t get me wrong, the more expensive paints can have more pigment or better finishes etc. But just as with clothes, the name doesn’t always make them better than high street and they spend a lot on advertising and being aspirational.

That said, we have to have clay paints on our old walls and they are £ and that’s about what they are made of as much as anything else. One of the nicest paints we ever had though at our old house was from Wilko and it was pennies in a sale!

Jeezitneverends · 10/05/2024 19:40

Step away from the magnolia!!!! It shouldn’t even be legal!!

Agreed! However, if F&B relaunched it as Aged Notepad, or something, I'm sure it would fly off the shelves 😂

😂well that's why we're changing it! The house is so nice that even magnolia doesn't look too bad. I might be biased as we only just moved in, still in honeymoon period!

Aged Notepad 😂

AlltheFs · 10/05/2024 23:26

I’d definitely buy aged notepad.

I picked a colour the other day and my mum said “ooh that’s nice, very magnolia”.
I binned the tester 😂

BlueMongoose · 11/05/2024 11:42

I find PBW looks very blueish in cast in some lights, and unless you're very careful with other colours, tends to look a bit 'cheap/landlord'. Timeless goes with just about everything and is less cold and aggressive generally. If you find it a bit too dull, I'd go for another type of white, depending on your wall/other colours. Not PBW, though.

I agree about the cost of claypaint, but these days, the paint I use on modern walls (Dulux Trade) has shot up in price, it's eye-watering and close to or more than claypaint.
