Dulux Timeless or just white? East facing

We narrowed it down to Timeless, or perhaps White Cotton / Pure Brilliant White in our large open plan downstairs area.
The room is facing W and E, my only worry with using Timeless in the East part is that it seems to look quite grey.
House is a 70s build, we tend to prefer simple/modern furniture, but not the art gallery style.

Will Timeless look murky on cloudy days?
I've probably already tried all the dulux swatches 😣

I'd like to keep the chosen colour in some other rooms too, for consistency. Thanks :)

This is the best photos I have (kitchen not fully finished-needed shelves and tiling behind hob).

Thanks - is that Timeless?

What bugs me is - I want 'White'. But on the Deluxe palette, looking at the examples, NONE of them look actually White! They all look, well, 50 shades of Grey! Even the Pure Brilliant White doesn't actually look it on the various photos called up on imdb. I would have thought there'd be more nuance.

Nothing seems actually 'with a tiny hint of'... White Apple is basically very very light green, Jasmine very light yellow.

Not sure if it shows well on the screen but the difference is quite big. Fine cream (left) looks like pure white with a drop of yellow, a clear sunny colour. Timeless (right) look a bit like a warm grey, but very very pale, almost white. I'd call it ivory. Much less saturated.

Thanks for posting. I guess Fine Cream would be similar to Jasmine White then?

FondOfOwls · 09/05/2024 14:47

@AlltheFs Timeless looks stunning in your kitchen! It goes very well with the older style and exposed beams. I do wonder if something else would work in my plain modern house.

Timeless looked awful in our kitchen - cold and grey. We painted over it the next day with a warm cream.

Yes Timeless.
Too white looks wrong in ours though. We have slaked lime upstairs (previous owner) and I don’t care for it. That is whiter than Timeless.

We can’t have Timeless in most of the rest of the house though as can only have clay paints on the older walls. The kitchen is gypsum plaster but the rest is mostly lime so needs to breathe which makes it even harder!

Bluebell247 · 09/05/2024 14:48

Swedish white is a nice neutral white.

FondOfOwls · 09/05/2024 14:49

@LindaDawn Actually, jasmine white looks incredibly like Timeless, as it is a softer, less saturated shade. On my west facing wall it has a hint of cool green as opposed to slight yellow of timeless.
Fine Cream is the brightest. Sorry can't really capture it on the photo.
Jasmine white looked best in my girls rooms, East facing, better than timeless!

@SharonEllis I also painted A3 sheets and moved them about the house, is that big enough?? DH didn't want me to cover the walls too much just yet. The decorator isn't free until July now!

What brand is that?

I prefer Timeless - white is somehow just too stark for me.

I had it in a previous living room and loved it. My parents have it in the whole house and there’s no yellow/grey tone.

I would say A3 is probably enough but it depends a lot how you see things. To be really sure I would do a long strip of lining paper myself. Put it in the centre of the room but also put it against the white woodwork (assuming you have white wood work) as that will really show up how you perceive the colour. Use masking tape to pin the sheets up. It is really hard - good luck!

NewspaperTaxis · 09/05/2024 17:33

Not sure about cardboard - the paint doesn't always come across in the same way imo. Is there a reason not to paint large swathes or portions of the wall itself in the colour desired to check - other than it may look awful until you get the proper job done?

Below is the sort of thing I mean - it's a virtual thing showing Dulux Pure Brilliant White in context. No way does that look anything like Pure Brilliant White - and that's about the whitest sample there is!

I don't see how anyone is meant to guess on that - though another paint sample example I used with a light yellow colour last year did seem accurate.

Dulux Timeless or just white? East facing
FondOfOwls · 09/05/2024 17:44

@NewspaperTaxis DH isn't to keen on having massive patches of colours on magnolia walls for the next two months. I might have to convince him.
It would be the best to narrow it down to 2-3 colours.
At the moment it would be Timeless, Fine Cream and either Brilliant White or White Cotton...

We have Timeless in every room of our house. White looks too harsh. We are just about to decorate the sitting room. We are going to go with one wall pale cream roses and the other 3 walls Timeless.

Bluebell247 · 09/05/2024 18:24

@FondOfOwls swedish white is dulux. It says it's a grey white but it's really not at all. I've got it in a bedroom on the woodwork -I'll try and remember to take a pic when I'm home for what it's worth. I've also got timeless elsewhere which works well for me as it's an old house. I find pbw too harsh.

Sunnnybunny72 · 09/05/2024 18:53

Summer linen is lovely. Dulux.

TizerorFizz · 09/05/2024 18:55

Whites come in all sorts of shades. I have gone for a "red" hued white in my East facing kitchen. It's easy to live with. In my holiday house we have Wevet by F&B in the open plan areas. It's a slightly grey white but makes the room look bright. I'm keen on colour elsewhere and I don't get the love of Timeless. There are also so many manufacturers of interesting paints now, I love looking for inspiration. I'm quite keen on Craig and Rose too.

I fell in love with it, DH didn't- he called it dirty!!!
I was wondering if I could have it in our bedroom... maybe still will.

Not heard of Craig and Rose but looked on their website. Under Whites, in fairness they do have Marble Dust and that to its credit does look actually white and similar to the kind of thing we are looking for the hallway of our 1930s house with Art Deco stylings. Here is the link:

Looks pricey, mind.

Timeless. I've had it in my bedroom for years and it doesn't look yellow

LumiB · 09/05/2024 22:07

I have jasmine white in my stairway as there is very little natural light. I like it.as.its.not white but not magnolia. Having said that I just did PBW in my mum's house and I love it and they have lots of light so I'll be grtting my.atairs done in PBW next yr

woodpecker2 · 09/05/2024 22:13

I like PBW you can buy different finishes easily like satin wood for skirting and doors and use a bathroom paint or kitchen paint types and they will blend in. I like the Dulux trade super Matt for a nice finish and is very opaque.

TizerorFizz · 10/05/2024 09:01

@NewspaperTaxis

Smaller manufacturers are always more money but at least you are different! There's also Edward Bulmer, Little Greene, Paint and Paper Library,Claybrook, Sanderson, Fired Earth, House of Hackney, Lick, Designers Guild etc etc. So many MN posters never consider. It's boring Dulux Timeless or white all the way on here! There's so much more to look at!

Hadalifeonce · 10/05/2024 09:04

We have timeless in several rooms, it reflects the hues from the rest of the room, so seems to have a hint of blue or green, or grey depending.

Islandsmeh · 10/05/2024 09:04

I'm not a fan of standard PBW as I think it can have a blue grey cast. For bright white I use Dulux light and space, it is really clean. But otherwise I love Timeless, it's my goto "not-quite-white".
