How to refurb this door

I bought an old 70’s house that needs lots of TLC and I’m doing lots of work myself.

I hate the look of this front door and want to freshen it up. Can anyone tell me if they think I can paint over the brown stuff? Maybe I need to sand it all down first?

Don't worry - the net curtains are going soon 😊

It needs sanding before undercoating and topcoating. Maybe get rid of the nets and use the frosted glass stick on stuff. That would help.

You can paint it using paint for upvc. Something like frenchic.

Looks like wood, is it? You just need a good primer to cover the old stain, then paint it whatever colour you like. You can usually get good advice on what will do the job from a decorators centre, like a Brewers, if you've got one near you.

Thanks all 😊

Yes it is wood which is why I’d rather keep it. I’m not keen on the white upvc doors.
I was going to buy a sander anyway so will give it a go.

BTW the windows are frosted but when we take the net curtains away I think people can still see in. I was thinking of small roller blinds on the back of the door and side window (just for night time) but not sure

A mouse type sander is handy for doors. Use making tape on the edges when painting, an undercoat and a standard exterior satin or eggshell. Gloss is harder to use and can look a bit dated, I think.
