Hello!

We are a family of 5 (our kids are 11, 10 and 8yrs old) and we're moving from Madrid to the UK. We looked at various places and have landed on Bishop's Stortford because of the schools and it's good train connections.

We're a bit list when it comes to schools...any information on how the high school in-year application process works would be much appreciated! Our eldest will be going into year 7 in sept2024 and we're in a tricky situation because we don't have an address yet (looking for houses to let but nothing available yet for August 1st) so we would have to apply for an in-year spot. We like Hockerill, Herts and Essex of course but I've heard it's basically imposible to get in. How far are catchment areas? 1.5 miles is still considered "close" or does it have to be less than 1mile? What happens if no schools have an open spot--is there a local education authority to apply to that will give us a spot somewhere? There's no way we end up with no school spots on September, right?

Seeing this panorama we've considered other towns:
Does anyone have any other london-accesible (40min or less commute) town recommendations with good high schools?

Any info would be much appreciated! 🙂
