How to spruce up an old pine dining table - paint/varnish??

Just done a big kitchen reno. Can't afford to replace the old dining table just yet, it's a solid pine one, see pic. It looks bad as 20+ years old now! I'm thinking if I sand down the top and give it a lick of varnish or paint it may look ok for a while?

Any tips or advice on how to best DIY this, and would it be bad if I painted it a colour to match the kitchen?

Have a look at Annie Sloan colours. I would personally sand the top and varnish, keep it wood, but paint the legs and the chairs too. You can also wax them once done to protect the paint.
I have bought lots of old furniture on ebay and FB marketplace and the Annie Sloan paint is really good quality, it is amazing how a lick of paint can transform something...

Sand the top right back then use a white tinted oil on it. Then paint the base and legs in whatever colour you like. These tables are 'in' when done like that and it will look great.
