I’m going with:

Wind chimes -previous owner left them behind. Helps block out the annoying yapping of the dogs on either side
No spare room -l hate house guests so suits me perfectly!
Bath -every house l buy my mum reckons l need to remove the bath. I’m standing firm and leaving it

The only things I am astonished by on this thread are no freezer, no hot running water and no kettle. HOW???🤔😲
I am also surprised by no toaster, but that's probably because I'm too scared to use a grill without a responsible adult around (I'm 46!)

Everything else seems fine and I was just telling my DS recently how much I would love a serving hatch. He's 21 and he didn't even know it was once a commin feature.

I have no shower and no dishwasher or tumble dryer, just dont see the point in any of them TBH!
oh, also no running hot water for about 3-4 yrs now and it doesnt bother me (bathroom is right next to the kitchen so its easy to just heat up a kettle for hot water).

Also I have the same mirrors up that came with the house about 26 yrs ago and my 'temporary' back step is an old plastic exercise step that I bought as a teenager.
I never understand those people who just 'cant live with/out' x,y or z thing..... Im generally unbothered by most things and tend to ignore fashions in decorating.

I’m guessing you live alone?

If you have no shower, I assume you take baths, but do you only take cold ones, if you have no running hot water? Brr. No hot water is presumably some plumbing problem rather than a design trend, though?

landoflostcontent · 25/04/2024 15:07

Also have artex ceilings. I thought it would be a deal breaker before we bought this house but they are solid and don't have cracks like our previous house. Painting is a pain but we just don't look up and they should see us out 😄

I still have my wooden front door (Kentucky style door with clear bullseye glass in some of the panes) and people are always surprised when I say I won't be changing my front door for a UPVC or composite one, because I simply LIKE my door.
Also got leaded windows in the diamond shapes.
Older style furniture (Chesterfield sofa, Queen Anne style lamp tables etc)
No air fryer, no microwave, no dishwasher and no tumbledryer.
I love my home - it's cosy, comfortable and a happy place and I've always liked old-fashioned styles for some reason - we did have everything really modern before we "did down" our room and I prefer its olde-worlde charm

One thing I have got that I despise, is those vertical blinds that always remind me of offices, surgeries and college but so many people seem to have them.

Why don’t you change the blinds if you despise them?

Can I ask honestly , is it a financial constraint? I can’t imagine living with no hot water running and see it as a basic, I get you can boil a kettle but to habe a bath that’s many kettles past that it would be sink washes and no showers?

StarsHideYourFir3s · 25/04/2024 16:03

Only one bathroom - cba with cleaning another one!

I generally only have a bath once a week as it does take about an hour to fill the bath with kettles and pans! Other then that I have a 'shower' (takes 2 kettles, fill a bucket with hot water and use a jug!). I honestly prefer my shower method as I hate getting my face wet and its more precise.
Originally it was a financial decision as my boiler broke and I couldnt afford a new one, since then Ive had the money several times and family offered to buy a new boiler but I prefer it. Meant I got rid of my gas bill completely, halved my water bill and it doesnt seem to make much difference to my leccy bill.
(its probably only possible and practical though because I do live alone and bathroom and kitchen are right next door).

oh, thought of another one!
I have a 3rd bedroom that is off the 2nd. Very undesirable if you have a family but becomes a giant closet if you live alone!

I don't really know what people hate, but, I have cobwebs that get cleaned every couple of months. I don't notice them unless I'm doing a deep clean.

Also no tumble dryer. I have a washing line and a clothes horse.

None of my furniture matches. I have ikea stuff mixed with Chinese cabinets and quirky side tables, velvet deep button chairs with a modern beige corner sofa. I have books everywhere and every inch of wall has a picture on it. No mirrors though.

I have a 100' lawn which is slowly being replaced with flower borders.

If it wasn't for my dh I'd get rid of the TV. Wish I had space for a man cave so all his stuff could go in there. Or a sitting room for my stuff lol

I can't afford to, otherwise I would. I have a massive window.

I find vertical blinds are fine for big windows, easy to adjust, not the nightmare to clean that Venetian blinds are. Nowadays , plenty of designs so no need to look like those in hospitals, offices etc . I hope you learn to love your verticals!

Sounds lovely and quirky, but a nightmare to clean!

Thanks - I'll have a look around - I've got to admit, they are better than venetian for privacy and you're so right with the cleaning of them.
I'm definitely going to have a look - thanks for the inspiration :)

Bamaluz · 25/04/2024 17:55

Anaglypta wallpaper, and nobody else here has admitted to it so it must be a real no-no!
It's a floral pattern, not the awful geometric stuff, and I like it.
It would take half the plaster off underneath if I ever tried to remove it, adult DS absolutely hates it, but he doesn't live here so I don't care.

We have some artex too. I’m not taking it down as I think the ceiling would fall in.

Justbrowsing2024 · 25/04/2024 18:28

Lots of white and grey. Loved it before it was a Hinch thing and don't care that its not the fashion anymore.
Wall mounted TV
Open plan. I swore I would never but it suits our family so much.

WaitingfortheTardis · 25/04/2024 18:30

The log burner, I love it.

the other thing is that it quite possibly contains asbestos (if it dates from before the mid 1990s) so if you decide to remove it get an asbestos test done first (few hundred quid) to check before you go at it with a hammer.

I once went out with a guy whose grandparents asked us to stay over.. they had a quirky cottage… I was most surprised to find there was another grandchild asleep in a room that led off from ours - when I say surprised, I think I screamed when this person appeared from what I thought was a closet door!😁

HP89 · 25/04/2024 19:30

Taxidermy

DoNotScrapeMyDataBishes · 25/04/2024 19:38

Fake grass - I don't personally like it, but I don't dislike it to the point I'd change it and it works better than real grass would at the moment.

Wood paneling all through the hallway (real wood not the current faux trend) - it's just practical in quite a long narrow space where kids are brushing past with bags and coats and stuff.

Stained glass - ours is UPVC but my office has lovely splotches of colour on a sunny morning from it (it runs along the top of the bay window and patio doors) and it just makes my heart as happy as it can be on a Monday morning when I'm logging on to work.

The kids would nominate the very early 00s jacuzzi bath because they've found out if you fill it to a certain level you can make it fire waterjets at any sibling sharing the bath - but they're out of luck cos I want the bugger gone soon!

It's not too bad really. I don't have much furniture. Lots of houseplants though which need regular watering and dusting.

Brogues · 26/04/2024 07:44

Bloody loads…

Log burner IN a conservatory (feels like I should score extra points for that). My favourite room all year round.

Grey bedroom with wall mounted TV (although we barely use it) complete with grey ensuite. So calming and restful. Also done before it was a trend.

Some Artex ceilings.

Plastic wood look Amtico flooring.

Bifolds in open plan kitchen diner.

Leather sofas.

Washing machine in a cupboard in the bathroom. I love it but it always surprises people. Personally I hate seeing people's underwear spinning around the wash when drinking coffee in someone's kitchen. Much better hidden in a cupboard.

This is the norm in many places around the world. Esp Australia and NZ, in the USA the apartment we had fir sabbatical visit washer and tumble dryer in a bathroom

Librarybooker · 26/04/2024 08:06

Main bathroom downstairs.

I suits us and isn’t uncommon here in a street full of older houses.

Lots of secondhand stuff and non matching furniture.

Eclectic is our style and it suits us and the space we have.
