Parents juggling growing families, how do you handle storage challenges? Any genius ideas for designing your child's room?

Get less stuff ?

You need to be specific - what is the challenge - what do you have - wardrobe? Drawers? Under bed ? Elsewhere in the house ?

My DC grew up in HK where apartments are small and space at a premium. My survival tips:

  • Less stuff- nothing compensates for too much stuff. Clothes - Work out what they need, buy only that, and be ruthless about getting it out of the door as soon as they've grown out of it. Borrow, don't buy, stuff they will only need once before they outgrow (eg wetsuit or big rucksack/ sleeping bag for a school trip). Do not accept bags full of donated clothes that they will only fit into in 5 years.
  • Don't allow crap like oversized stuffies, huge plastic dinosaurs or novelty foam footballs into the house- they have minimal play value and just take up space. Declutter toys regularly. Mine basically played with lego, cars, playmobil fort and dinosaurs and everything else just sat there (until I donated it).
  • Mid sleeper beds are great as can store a lot of stuff underneath- drawers are better than cupboards as keep things more organised.Use drawer dividers to keep clothes organised as possible.
