New front door - so expensive!

We're looking to get a new front door fitted. Nothing out of the ordinary, just a single composite door with a glass window. The cheapest quote I am getting is £2k. Am I being unrealistic to think this is a lot? I've tried four different firms.

We had a new front door last year and paid £3k but that included a satin glass side panel and detailed stained glass in the front door. I basically chose the most expensive glass! We could have got a cheaper door but I love the door, I haven’t seen another one like it and it’s worth every penny. I doubt you’ll get a decent quality door below £2k.

I live in the South East and got quoted 3k for a Victorian-style half glazed door, fully fitted and painted including locks and other hardware. No stained glass.

I contacted a local carpenter who wanted £1350 to fit a new door of my choosing but I'd pay for the door/hardware/cost of painting on top of that and any extra materials. A local handyman wanted 300 quid to paint a front door.

We paid 2k for a new composite door with 2 side lights in Yorkshire. 2k sounds expensive for just a door unless you are going for a pricey style.....or depending on your location.

I've just had my front door replaced with a composite one. I went on the Solidor site and it suggested £2200 without fitting which I would be contacted about by one of their installers, so more £££.

Found a local double glazing guy (who was recommended). £1500 and that included a glass panel above with house number etched which the Solidor one didn't. He even refitted the door knocker which was a very personal(to us) one.Very, very pleased with it.

@CeciliaMars try and go with a local company.

Ebay, solid wood & get a local carpenter to fit it.

I'm with you

We're getting ours done this week and we're paying £1395 including VAT and fitting (East Midlands)

We had 2 other quotes for £2300 and £1790, they were with a national company and a big local company though, the cheap quote is a smaller local independent...have you tried anyone like that?

YouveGotAFastCar · 15/04/2024 20:54

@polkadotpixie Would you mind sharing your supplier? I’m west Mids and wondering if they’d cover 😅

Of course 😊 We're using Southworth Windows in Loughborough. I'd recommend ringing them though because their online form thing doesn't seem to work properly

Thanks for all your replies. I have got quotes from a range of larger, national companies and local independent companies. The quotes are all £2k plus. I have now contacted a local joiner, I'll see what he says. I don't understand how people on very average salaries ever manage to afford to replace or fix things on their properties! I am in an expensive area of the South East though...

We got a composite door almost ten years ago and it was 4K! Still going strong though (as you’d hope).
