Moving to Wiltshire

Thanks in advance for your suggestions. I'm looking to relocate for a job in the second half of 2024. I need to be commutable to the centre of Salisbury ((just north of the cathedral) within about an hour. Looking for at least 2 bed house with garden and off road parking and close to countryside dog walks. Budget up to day £750k but the closer to £550k the better. I currently live in a village and do like that so being outside of town is no issue subject to commute time ianno problem. No schools to work about. Any tips gratefully received.

I live in Warminster and some of the surrounding villages are lovely. Crockerton, Horningsham, the deverills and Corsley. About 30 to 45 minutes to Salisbury.

Dreemhouse · 13/04/2024 18:42

Shrewton is nice, and next to Salisbury plain so brilliant for dog walks.

There are lots of lovely villages along the A36 Wylye Valley. Great Wishford, Hanging Langford, Wylye to name but three. You would be about 25 mins or less from Salisbury.

Although on the south side of Salisbury if you are in the city centre you could try Harnham, Odstock or Homington on that budget. What do you like doing outside of work?

Agree with PP's, the villages between Warminster and Salisbury are lovely. Also look at the Woodford valley (no shops but a couple of lovely pubs) and Winterslow/Pitton.
I'm a couple of miles north of the centre and have lovely walks on my doorstep but can still walk to town.

I have friends in Hindon which is truly gorgeous, stunning countryside and an excellent pub.

Have a look at Mere and the surrounding areas. The villages described above are lovely but have become pricier recently thanks to the new gastro pubs at Horningsham and Maiden Bradley. Mere is a delight. Probably 30 minutes to Salisbury or there's the train at Gillingham or Tisbury. Agree about Hinton. Also East Knoyle. I grew up around these villages and they are delightful. Lucky you!

Thanks so much everyone, I really appreciate it. Lots of lovely ideas to start me off looking.

Thanks @GOODCAT , walking the dog, birdwatching and nature generally, love a country pub ideally with some nice food. I'm a simple creature 😁.

Anywhere in a village around or the outskirts of Salisbury will be a good call then. The parking is a pain, so you may want to factor cycling or a bus in.

There is the water meadow and chalk downs which are both great places to be.

The south side is good for getting down to the coast. The west is less expensive and feels more rural.

CrotchetyQuaver · 14/04/2024 13:15

That's enough budget to buy on the northern edges of the new forest, fordingbridge or redlynch spring to mind. There's a big RSPB patch of land at Hale/Godshill at the B3978/9 junction with the New Forest the other side of the road so ticks all your boxes.

Or there's the achingly pretty village of Rockbourne which has period properties within your budget range.

Ringwood might also be worth a look as within the hour commute time.

GoodnightAdeline · 14/04/2024 14:30

Just a bit of advice though - avoid garrison towns/villages like the plague. Generally speaking the further you are from them the classier the location.

Twobronzedeer · 25/07/2024 13:19

If you are still looking, I have a 4 bed character property that has recently gone on sale, that is well within your £550k budget. No chain and 7 minutes from mainline railway to Salisbury.

XVGN · 26/07/2024 07:45

Try Sherborne. Lovely town. Maybe too big for you. And too far - on the 1 hour limit. But also on same train line if you need an alternative.

Never been there but perhaps Romsey has something?

Fordingbridge is lovely
