Floating toilets and weight limit

ReacherSaidNothing · 13/04/2024 17:43

We recently moved into a new house which has a floating toilet. Not my first choice but happy to live with it for now. I have a worry which is probably me being silly but my SIL is coming to visit us soon for the first time and she is morbidly obese (unsure of her exact weight and would never dream of asking). Do you think she would be fine to sit on the toilet or would it be at risk of getting damaged in some way? I'm happy to be told I'm being paranoid, stupid or mean but would just be happy to have other people's opinions or insight on this, thanks. SIL will definitely need the toilet when she is here as she has medical issues.

I think a toilet aid which offloads the weight issue is likely the way forward. Her knee means she struggles up and down so we can maybe buy a Mowbray and put it in the loo, can say her knee is why we got it and hopefully minimises potential offence I hope...

When I was about a size 24-28, I was petrified of the things, hated using them. I wouldnt want to have someone of my size using them to be honest.

You just love to fat shame, don't you?

???

Why is that fat shaming?

Fieldsofgold1 · 13/04/2024 19:21

Her joint replacement isn't relevant to the post!

Why are you so concerned about the SIL's weight and size?

Its the whole point of the OP!!!

Is she too heavy for the toilet!!

At a size 20, someone could be 14 stone or 22 stone, depending on their height

If she is only 14 stone, its not likely to be a problem for the toilet

ReacherSaidNothing · 13/04/2024 19:35

@tenderstem yes he's closer to his DB than DSis, DB has mentioned her functional issues before when she's stayed at his house previously so they can talk about it

She's about 5 foot 7 I'd say

I'm 18 stone and a size 16. I exercise a fair bit
Bit of a belly, no fat rolls etc

Brumhilda · 13/04/2024 19:38

The problem isn’t so much her weight, but more to do with a force multiplier.

force is m x v where m is mass and v is velocity in metres a second. And it sounds a bit daft but if she ends up landing on it a bit hard and she’s moving even at the last minute at 2 metres a second (which is easily done) then the effect of her weight is doubled.

if she manages to land herself gently on it, then it’s probably all good, but if the final bit of the positioning is a sharp drop because her legs don’t have the strength to hold her weight in that position you could be in for some interesting times.

all in all op, I’d find a way of getting out of the visit if I were you.

ReacherSaidNothing · 13/04/2024 19:42

@brumhilda I've saw her at times having to use a fair bit of momentum when getting up off the sofa and the odd time she's been staggering a bit afterwards. Tbh the bathroom is quite narrow and I'm having visions of her potentially face planting into the door if she outright loses her balance. I don't want to refuse a visit I'd feel awful if we did that. Think a toilet aid is the way to go

Could you wedge some wooden blocks under the loo to support it?

I would be worried by the humiliation factor.

It’s not the getting up off it, it’s the landing down hard on it that’s going to be the problem.

good luck!

I thought the same thing. I'm a very comfortable 14 at 11 stone and I'm taller than average for a woman!

Crazymadchickenlady · 13/04/2024 20:50

My friend has a floating toilet that’s not that secure. She has wooden blocks underneath it to support it. Think they are there all the time and not just when I visit!! Maybe you could get a toilet aid frame and say one of you has a dodgy knee/hip and needs it.

SeeingRainbowsInTheGloom · 13/04/2024 20:52

How handy are you? Ours was slightly bowing away (shoddy workmanship!) and we ended up jamming a piece of wood underneath as a support and it's been fine, and doesn't show in our bathroom.

Mamette · 13/04/2024 17:53

If you think the wall-hung toilets are not able to support your SIL then I would be more worried that she could hurt herself. You sound like you’re worried about the toilet.

Edited

Well yeah I would be more worried about my toilet. SIL presumably gets up off toilets daily

Keepingittogetherstepbystep · 13/04/2024 20:55

Over 200kg for the toilet.

The sink would possibly be an issue I once knocked the sink off the wall at a friend's house. I was 9 at the time.

littlemousebigcheese · 13/04/2024 18:10

I'm 15 stone and never broken a toilet

You aren't all that heavy. I think the SIL sounds more like 20+ stone

candycane222 · 13/04/2024 21:02

You could put the blocks underneath it and offer her a tour of the defect highlights, including your anxiety about all the vathroom fittings. I mean I'm only 10st and tbh floating toilets make me a bit anxious. OK they probably make cleaning eaiser , but it still feels wrong to me...

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 13/04/2024 21:08

I am about 15 stone, and we had a floating toilet which fell off!

It didn't happen as soon as I sat on it though, I think it was definitely repeat exposure plus possible fixture issues.

Obviously though, it was fine, until it wasn't.

Will a commode chair fit over the top of the toilet? Something to just give a bit of extra support, and you could just say you've been made aware of some building related issues so you're trying not to aggravate them further because the house is just a money pit at the moment?
