Floating toilets and weight limit

We recently moved into a new house which has a floating toilet. Not my first choice but happy to live with it for now. I have a worry which is probably me being silly but my SIL is coming to visit us soon for the first time and she is morbidly obese (unsure of her exact weight and would never dream of asking). Do you think she would be fine to sit on the toilet or would it be at risk of getting damaged in some way? I'm happy to be told I'm being paranoid, stupid or mean but would just be happy to have other people's opinions or insight on this, thanks. SIL will definitely need the toilet when she is here as she has medical issues.

At my biggest I was 20stone and a comfortable size 16. Looks can be deceiving. I never pulled a toilet off the wall… but I did crack a toilet seat once. I wish I was more embarrassed but dh and I found it pretty funny. Horror of horrors if it was someone else’s though!

Thankfully, in hindsight, gall stones cheat coded me down to 14 stone in a few months.

I would be worried too OP. You’re not being mean… my FIL at 24stone broke one of our dining chairs and I was gutted. As you say, the issue was sitting down heavily as opposed to just existing. I was always careful sitting down to avoid the shameful creaking of furniture but there’s a point where size outweighs your best efforts and careful is no longer an option.

I think PP’s suggestion of a frame is a good one.

We get on ok, she's DH's sister and he can find her a bit difficult at times. Just one toilet here unfortunately and it's a 20 mile drive from where she's staying to our house.

I've worked in various office buildings where all the toilets are wall hung - and never seen one actually fallen off despite the amount of wear and tear they must have all day long. I have seen them where they have separated from the wall sealant or grout or whatever is there so there's a tatty looking gap like when a bath sealant goes, but never anything worse than that.

I can't see a brand anywhere on the bathroom suite at all. Thanks to everyone who replied, even those who are implying I'm being a bit of a bitch by even asking this but it's fine, I'm a big girl and can suck it up.

Think it’s fair.
Personally I’d just not bother having people in the house that were so overweight they actually could break fixtures and fittings due to their weight!
I’m sure the reasons are all very valid and no doubt it’s a medical issue they can’t do anything about… but it’s still a no.
If I actually knew anybody that big and they were in town, I’d rather just put them up at the hotel and meet in the restaurant for a social, my treat.
Would be a lot cheaper than wrecking my bathroom!

Double hip?
I thought it was unspecified (singular) joint?

I have the opposite question of how short is the OPs SiL? Because shes absolutely over a size 20 apparently but might only weight between 15 and 20 stone?

At 5 foot 8 my sister is a size 18 at 19 stone, but the OP makes it sound certain that the SiL is well over a size 20

The point being OP if shes 5ft 3 and well over a size 20 she still might not weigh more than a tall well built man who you might not even think about as a problem when going to the toilet. But if she's 6 foot and well over a size 20 that might present more of an issue.

I agree with others though that the sink is more likely to be an issue than the toilet. If I wanted to spare her feelings i might put some kind of support stand in there and invent a fall and a temporary bad back for one of you to justify its existence.

But then we do get a poster who likes to pop up every once in awhile with deep concerns about how their overweight friend/relative is going to break their car/sofa/dining chair...

It's knee surgery SIL is needing. She lives about 400 miles away and is up for a visit. She's staying with DHs brother as he has the room for her and they are coming over for the day as she hasn't seen the new house yet.

I'm not a size 20 @tenderstem81

Her joint replacement isn't relevant to the post!

Why are you so concerned about the SIL's weight and size?

Skybluepinky · 13/04/2024 19:21

For joint surgery most trusts want u to have a healthy range BMI so lots are told to lose weight.
Sounds like u don’t actually want her to visit, so just tell her.

@Skybluepinky we definitely want her to visit, she's still to see the new house but I'm aware that the toilet isn't very bariatric-friendly.
