Smelly Shower Drain

If anybody uses the main shower in the house there is a terrible smell all over the house. I regularly use a plunger and clear the drain of any hair that's gone the plughole. I put bleach or Milton down the drain too. That helps a bit but the smell comes back really quickly.
Could it be something like a leak under the floor. The drain at the back of the house is clear and the water seems to be flowing through all right.

Does the shower lack a u-bend?

The water in a u-bend prevents air from the drains entering the home. Perhaps your shower (ground floor?) was fitted without one?

It is a ground floor bathroom. The house was built quickly and I think not to the highest standard so maybe that's it.

Oh I had this, I used this stuff. Left it five mins then used the shower head attachment thing and ran hot water down it. Cleared it right up . It could be a leak but it is more likely a blockage , and the gas in the p bend thing

We’ve got the stinkiest pipes I’ve ever come across. Regularly (monthly) do a massive plunging exercise and still get stinky drains. I’ve taken to de-black gunking them with equal parts citric acid and baking powder. Usually add some essential oils or rose Astonish anti bac so it smells nice. Mix the powders together, sprinkle/push it down the drain, add smelly stuff and a bit of water, stick the plug in once the foam reaches the top, leave it for 10 mins then rinse with plenty of water. The acid breaks down soap scum then the fizzing cleans it away. Good for hard water areas.

Thank you. I will try both and report back. I'm in a hard water area. My oldest is moved out now but has long very thick hair so it's possible there's a clog far down the pipe from when she still lived at home.

Are you sure nobody is waffle stomping in your shower?

Yes I have long hair and mine smelled like sewage, was coming into the hall way, seemed to dissipate when someone had a shower. So I googled.

i only put a couple of cap fulls of the drain cleaner down, not half a bottle, and as said left for five mins then ran fully hot water directly down it. Smell went and hasn’t come back, that was about 3 weeks ago.

Sounds like you're both onto something with the hair and the drain cleaner! In my experience, hard water and long hair are a tricky combo. I had a similar issue once, and what helped was DIY-ing a drain inspection. I found a helpful article that included a plumbing diagram, showing how clogs can form deeper down in the system—especially in homes with older pipes. Sometimes it's not just the immediate drain but further along where the pipes narrow or turn. It might be worth checking out! Good luck, and hopefully, that smell stays gone!
