Patio materials

Our garden currently has a combination of some very sorry-looking basic slabs and some decking that is rotting (with bare soil underneath). We want to replace it all but I'm feeling very overwhelmed by the options available. We want something affordable but will stand the test of time. Can anyone offer any inspiration?

Have a look at Topps Tiles' Everscape range. I'm having my rear terrace and front steps in these (fossil white). They are porcelain so very durable and low maintenance, and look very smart. I'd recommend going to a showroom if you can - the staff are very helpful.

With patios, it's generally the labour that is the most expensive element, depending on how much work needs doing to prepare the site. Buying the cheapest slabs might be a false economy in terms of durability. Decking is probably a lot cheaper, but not as long-lasting, plus on other threads posters are talking about rat infestations underneath it!
