Bat surveys-is there a set procedure?

So we're looking at doing a refurb and know for sure we need a bat survey (numerous architects+builders with local knowledge have told us). It also looks like we have bats which is fair enough.
Have done some research, talked to some friends about it and am concerned about being ripped off.

Someone who went through the process has given the advice not to do anything that is unnecessary, know what you need to do and do not let them tell you.
Am a bit flummoxed by this, have contacted a local bat survey company and they have said "Have you had a Preliminary Roost Appraisal carried out yet, or is this where we need to start?"

From my research it's not clear where you start, and common sense seems to tell me why would I pay for a preliminary roost appraisal? Why not just go full survey Iif we think/know we have a bat[s]?
Can anyone cut through the confusion on this?
Any help will be gratefully received!
