Help choosing wall paint and carpet colour

Hi there,

Refurbishing rental flat at the moment - have done bathrooms to good standard!

Now I need to decide wall paint and carpet. We always had plain white walls and beige looped carpet....
Now want a light warm colour other than plain white!! Have short listed White cotton dulux. But worried it might be too grey for dark flat ( never gets direct sunlight!)

Any suggestions for warm grey/white in dulux?

Also, Which colour of carpet?? My bathroom are done in light grey tiles. But I can do other colour....dont want grey everywhere!

Please suggest a good colour scheme for paint and carpet....
I need to decide tomorrow!

Many thanks

Tried Dulux testers however still not able to decide - any suggestion/feedback?

Tried
Rocksalt ( too dark grey??)
White mist dark?
White cotton ( light grey ??) - Like it but Is it too cool for north facing living room & hallway?

Summer linen ( magnolia?)
TImeless
Jasmine white (cant make difference between white and this in the current lighting

Trying to get Flat looking modern hence trying to avoid Summer linen, magnolia type colours.

Or shall I go trade colours? Any feedback will be helpful! Need to decide tomorrow

We have White Mist in a south facing room and it looks more white than grey, it’s a true grey white if you see what I mean. May look greyer in a north room.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 22/03/2024 21:28

I have Dulux polished pebble in my living room which is a very light grey
I too considered rock salt

Muchtoomuchtodo · 22/03/2024 21:32

I have just done our living room in Leyland Wild Wheat. It’s a soft pale green which might be good in your North facing room. Only £36 for 5 litres too.

@skuml I would use something like Blush Pink with the grey bathroom tiles - lifts the mood away from grey. Wevet by F&B reflects light well and no doubt Dulux do a similar colour.

I don’t have carpets downstairs. We have wood floors and rugs. Where I do have carpets, we have a dark raison colour! I just love it. Fantastic with Elephants Breath and white furniture.

However colours like Driftwood (see John Lewis) are warm neutral greys. I would avoid steel grey and harsh greys. Definitely add some colour.

RogueFemale · 22/03/2024 23:23

You can seriously go mad trying to find the perfect off-white, but I can tell you the one I got after about 20 testers - and it's Farrow & Ball Wimborne White. A soft, warm off-white, works everywhere. You don't have to buy F&B paint, I had it mixed in Leyland paint for half the price.

RogueFemale · 22/03/2024 23:30

Following on, as I'm aware you have to make a decision tomorrow, if it has to be Dulux then Dulux Timeless is close to Wimborne White. https://www.dulux.co.uk/en/colour-details/timeless
I promise you that both of these are really safe colours.

Carpets can't be as urgent when you're at the painting stage, but a lot more depends on budget. If money no object I'd go for fake-sisal-type stuff, because it's much easier maintenance than the real natural flooring. Or you could consider cork tiles if the subfloor is suitable.

RogueFemale · 22/03/2024 23:44

Oh, just noticed this is for a rental flat. Then, definitely synthetic carpet. Get a marl/heather loop pile. i.e. not solid colour but flecked.

RogueFemale · 22/03/2024 23:46

Or cheap faux wood laminate if the subfloor is suitable.

Femmefatality · 23/03/2024 06:13

Always pure brilliant white in rentals, easier to do touch ups and maintenance after tenancies....

jaydess · 23/03/2024 06:34

Exactly. Pure white for rentals every time. Because the tenants can always touch up the walls

Yes, we are still deciding on paint ! and I need to book carpet fitting for end of next week. Bathroom kitchen pure white!

Thanks ! I also had pure white always there but notice it looks more yellowish and gruby after sometime...
I have grey in my house and its been 7 years - It still look good!
Thats why was thinking to go towards grey - perhaps less maintaince!

@skuml I agree, pure white is a bad idea and looks really bleak. Even a rental has to look nice! Another Dulux to consider is Almond White, one of their bog standard colours, - I had it in a rental years ago, with a darker laminate (fake walnut) floor.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 23/03/2024 14:11

LVT is a good option for a rental( durable and easy to look after)
I have Polyflor as do all the tradesmen I know!

Still shortlisting colour. Rest of apartment is grey and white scheme. Need to decide Living room and halwally colours.

In pic, I have Highlighted white cotton - light grey. worried about how it will look in northfacing living room. White cotton is in "cool" colour family.. blueish/greyish undertones!

Any warm white without much yellow undertones?
trying to achieve modern feel in apartment.

I am already paying for decorator thats why thinking to add a colour that brings warmth... and as i told earlier- white is turning out very expensive to keep - every 2 years it needs repaiting!

Any suggestion for t a warm white/off white/ greyish that can work in north facing...

Many thanks

We have just put white cotton in a north facing extension although it also has west and east windows plus skylights. Interestingly the ceiling although painted white cotton too, can look a different colour at certain times. Very pleased with the colour, and yes it looks the very palest grey at different times of the day,

NC03 · 24/03/2024 21:16

Rock salt does look dark there
This is it in my bathrooms, neither have any natural light

What about dulux thimble case or ash white?

TomaytoTomaato · 24/03/2024 21:32

How about Dulux Egyptian Cotton?

Really not light grey in a north facing room.

I've already told you the slightly warmer whites I'd suggest - F&B Wimbourne White (mixed in a cheaper paint), or Dulux Timeless, or Dulux Almond White.

Tested several testers incuding timeless, jasmine white etc... all were looking quite yellowish ...

I dint test F&B Wimbourne White... Perhaps will try that next time!
