Front door at the side

Hello i would appreciate some input please. I'm moving to a semi detached house with one access door only. It's at the side.

I've never lived anywhere without a front and back door before and thinking about the dog's safety and people being able to access the back garden straight from the path.

I'm posting a few examples of solutions as well as the door as is.

I'm thinking maybe putting a 'back' gate (6 foot) in front of the front door and attach a mail box to the house?

I don't want to spend much because I'll redo everything properly with french doors etc in a couple of years.

I will need a quick, cheapish solution though as otherwise it's free access from the front gate on the pavement all the way through to the back garden

Assuming your house is the 3rd pic (with the red car) I would put a fence/gate across just behind the door, where the blue bin is.

You will need to go out with the dog and open the gate rather than just opening the door and letting him/her out but that wouldn't be a big deal for me.

I think a metal side gate would work so anyone coming to the house would still be able to see the front door. Not sure what you mean by French doors? That side porch on the last photo would probably be the best long term solution.

ah you mean turning back windows into a back door with French doors.

Thank you both, yes i mean French windows/doors at the back but not for a couple of years. I'll put a side extension on in due course just thinking of quick solutions to prevent open access to the back garden straight from the front 😱

I think a 6 foot side gate after the front door with a latchey over thing at the top so it can be opened from both sides should be a reasonable interim solution.
