Weirdest name for a room/area in your home

Inspired by my having rooms in my house called "horse's room"* *and "the pretend bedroom". I am surely not the only one to be this weird...

(Horse's room is actually a sort of study/craft room, but a hobby horse is stored there in amongst a load of rolls of wrapping paper, so apparently it's his room. The pretend bedroom is a sightly hard-to-define space which could be a perfectly sensible dining room only we don't have a dining table in it. Got fed up of calling it 'that room... in there' and my 3yo decided that we should pretend it's a bedroom.)

(Yes my house is quite big, but also exceptionally shabby and peculiar. My shopping list was 'big, cheap and weird' and I achieved all points.)

The weed room. Kids bedroom 🤣 named because it smelt of weed for months after we moved in!

Dorriethelittlewitch · 04/03/2024 23:20

Our utility room is known as the "post office" cos once upon a time it was the village post office.

We also have concussion cupboard, a huge high cupboard on the half landing between the top floor and the middle floor. So called because if you leave the doors open, it's the perfect height for dh to smash his head off. It's a brilliant Christmas hiding present place though as at 5'8, I need a stepladder to reach all the shelves. The kids have no chance even with the stepladder.

Dc1's room is the lair. Dc2 only goes in wielding a sword!

The playmobil room (effectively the playroom) but full of more playmobil than the average toyshop because me and the kids are obsessed.

The "library" which is effectively a large book lined cupboard with a window you can see the sea from. I have a huge rocking chair in there and a small table for drinks.

In my old house we had a pretty external orangery we called the chicken shed.

We have the bowl of doom - a bowl on top of the fridge in the kitchen, as in DS “have you seen my keys” - me “try the bowl of doom”. (Our utility and utility bathroom used to be jokingly called the decontamination zone - until covid when it was used literally used as that and it wasn’t funny anymore.)

Westernish · 05/03/2024 15:09

We had a bedroom which we always referred to as The Posh Bathroom because that's what it had been when we moved in, and a windowless storage room which we called The Computer Room despite only having had a computer in there for about a month 20 years previously.

CombatBarbie · 05/03/2024 15:18

The Harry Potter room..... The bar basically.

The dining room is still referred to as the old kitchen for some reason but it's been shortened by a 1/3 to make way for a utility room which is called the laundry room. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Maybe the thoroughfare room was meant to be the office and you walk through it to get to the bedroom?

Edited

No, the office is too small to fit a bed in, came with a built in desk and lots of phone connections. The house was sold as a four bedroom but the fourth “bedroom” is the attic room, which can’t legally be a bedroom, so I think the previous owner put this stupid room in their extension so they could still claim it as a four bedroom house without counting the illegal attic bedroom.

We have Diagon Alley. It's a short passageway from the hall to the garage. We have a Diagon Alley road sign which we put up in there, so since then we've always called it that!

sciencemama · 05/03/2024 20:56

The cat room which is the spare bedroom without a bed but has two cat trees in it and tbh the cats spend a lot of time in there

AmazingBouncingFerret · 05/03/2024 21:00

The Other Room. It was originally a cinema room so it still has a projector hanging off the ceiling, so visitors get all excited for nothing when they first see it.
It’s basically another living room now. It has a tv/games consoles and sofa. A booze cabinet, floor to ceiling bookshelves that cover all the walls, and an arcade machine. It’s a good room to have with teenagers!

IamaRevenant · 05/03/2024 21:05

The Drawer of Doom. A large drawer under the coffee table filled with any crap that happened to be in the living room and we couldn't be bothered to tidy - old bills, batteries, paperclips, nail polish random foreign currency etc etc.

Also the Littlest Bedroom, sometimes also known as the Lodger's Room. It's basically a storage cupboard filled with crap (along the same lines as the Drawer of Doom but bigger - eg a dinghy, bags of clothes intended for the charity shop, broken electrical crap, rucksacks and so on). It could technically fit a single bed hence the names but we haven't actually used it for that purpose (yet... 😅)

We have three bedrooms but there are only two of us. We have the biggest room. The next room is the "spare room". Makes sense. The third and smallest room is the "spare spare room".

When we had our B&B there was a Jack and Jill room which could be accessed from either our accommodation or one of the B&B rooms. If we were using it ourselves, we would move the B&B wardrobe in front of the door. The room was obviously referred to as "Narnia".

We have a spider called Charlotte who lives in the kitchen window. I'm terrified of spiders but she is far enough away from the sink/kettle not to reach me. I won't let DH kill her.
At some point we believe Charlotte was eaten by or replaced by a slightly bigger different coloured spider. She is still Charlotte though. I address her morning and night.

I'm loving the names of these rooms though, I'm pondering on a name for DH's shed which is a home office come gaming room come painting little men (ogres) room. And a foul den of inequity I refuse to enter. Can anyone suggest a suitable name?!!!

We have two spare bedrooms in our loft conversion, the one we don't really use much is the Brexit room after we stockpiled a few tins and bags of pasta in case of food chain supply issues Grin

Our smallest bedroom is referred to as 'the back room' even though it's at the front b of the house. I think it's because in our first house the smallest bedroom was at the back and we called it the back room. Whenever I say it, everyone in the house knows which room I mean.

He yes our "back bedroom" is actually at the front for this exact reason! Oldest two kids and DH know what I mean (because they lived in the old house) by youngest is confused because her room actually is the back bedroom in this house 😁

I mean Foul Den of Iniquity sounds good to me 😃

Alchemistress · 05/03/2024 22:09

Parents have a room called the Concorde Suite which is a box room over the garage but used to have a picture of Concorde in it, which gave it its lofty title!

eloisie · 05/03/2024 22:17

The cathedral 😅 (a bedroom)

TheBell · 05/03/2024 22:23

I want a library like yours.

Chelsea26 · 05/03/2024 23:41

Our kids bedrooms are called The Library, Anfield, Millennium Falcon and Pikachu on Alexa.

We also have the snug which started as a pretentious joke and stuck.

DP has just built a garden room/pool room which is called a mixture of our surnames (complete with sign)

My parents don’t have any weird room names but they have ‘the table that’s not a table’ which is, very definitely a table, in the hall but you’re not allowed to put anything on it (hence ‘not a table’) However, if something important has to be brought with you when you leave, or given to someone it can be put on the table that’s not a table to remind you.

We have a room in our attic called the 'not-bathroom'.

So called because when we moved in 15 years ago and renovated this almost derelict house, we had the pipe work put into one of the attic rooms ready for when we had the money to put in a bathroom.

15 years later it's still a 'not-bathroom', filled with tons of paint, tools, bits of wood and a box of dust sheets.

Seagullsshitonhigh · 06/03/2024 00:51

Our spare room is called random room, named by one of our DGDs when she was about 5 she said Nanny I don't know what room this is, it has a computer a sewing machine and sometimes a bed (sofa bed) it's just a random room, this DGD is now 13 and we are still saying "Alexa, random room on' when wanting the smart light on.
