Think the pipes are going to blow!!

I'm in a house that's been converted into little flats. There's been a very loud humming noise coming from the pipes throughout the whole house since yesterday.

According to google, humming when the taps are on indicates high water pressure but the humming stops when they are on... Does anyone know why this is/how to fix it??

It's a rented flat - have already contacted landlords but they never reply to maintenance messages :(

Has one of the pipes jumped out of a clip?

Is it hot water or cold water pipes?

Nvm, you have a duplicate thread running.

Water hammer! We’ve had it, can’t remember what the plumber did, but it was easily fixed. Think it’s something to do with air getting in the system maybe. Used to happen when one particular loo was flushed. It was really loud.

It's air in the system. I believe you need a plumber to fix but I might be wrong.

@LittleGreenDragons realised after making this post that I should have posted in property/diy but don't know how to close the thread!!

It's the cold water tap - the humming stops when any tap in my flat is switched off. But as there are other flats in the house, I'm not sure whether the problem might be caused by one of their taps...

Really glad to hear that it doesn't sound like it's a difficult problem to fix - was just getting worried that it was something dangerous. Still nothing from LL but will chase again about getting them to call out a plumber - makes me really sad how negligent they are!!

If the humming or buzzing is coming from a tap, and stops when that tap is turned on, it is probably wear in a cartridge or washer, making the parts loose and vibrate.

You may be able to feel the top vibrating

An easy fix unless the tap is an unbranded foreign imports and parts to fit are unobtainable,

Boredwored · 29/02/2024 09:20

@PigletJohn thank you so much!!🙏I really appreciate the reassurance - the humming is so loud, I was worried it was something serious and scary.

Just checked and none of the taps feel like they're vibrating, but I've just found a leak from the pipes under the toilet - do you think that might be linked to it? I can't be 100% sure but it feels like the cistern is vibrating when the humming noise starts...

Possibly, depending where the leak is coming from.

It will probably be from water at high pressure, like mains cold, or combi hot.
