Narrow dining room

Hi everyone,

We just moved into a new house that has quite a narrow dining room (measures roughly 4m x 2.2m) and we are trying to find the best way to use the space.

Some practicalities: it’s usually just DH and I eating there, although we host on occasion. There is a door to another room in the far end of the dining room so we do need to be able to get through.

A regular dining table / chairs fits but is a squeeze to get around. I’m not too keen on banquette/booth style (annoying to squeeze in & out and I’m not sure I want to fix anything to the wall) but willing to be convinced otherwise.

Any suggestions are very much appreciated!

I would choose a fairly narrow oblong table that you can place against the wall with a chair either end, which you can bring out from the wall if you ever need to seat more people. I have less space than that in my current kitchen and have managed to fit a table in with no issues getting around it. You might want to paint the long walls in a pale, receding colour, and the end walls in something a bit deeper to give the illusion of width.

We got a table on Etsy that is narrower than usual and have a bench on one side and chairs on the other.
