how the heck do i silence the carbon monoxide alarm?

It's three beeps which apparently means the battery life is over. the batteries are not replaceable; I have to replace the whole unit.

But I can't get this bugger to shut up! It's going off every minute. The instruction leaflet says to replace it now but doesn't tell us how to silence the thing. Shall i just smash it to pieces?

What make it is?
I saw a YouTube video where you remove a sticker from the back and then there's a switch you can use a screwdriver to push to off instead of on. That was for a Honeywell alarm

ClematisBlue49 · 22/02/2024 16:20

I ended up smashing mine with a hammer. It was just like that episode of Friends!...

NonmagicMike · 22/02/2024 16:22

Large mallet. Failing that a rolling pin?

NannyR · 22/02/2024 16:24

We drowned ours in a bucket of water!

bananaapplepear · 22/02/2024 16:32

oh, how funny! I was joking but that really is what I need to do huh?

We ended up putting ours in the shed. I swear we could still hear the bloody thing! I can't remember how we dealt with it in the end, but I suspect a hammer might have been involved.

bananaapplepear · 22/02/2024 19:56

NannyR, how long did it take? Ours has been in water since this afternoon and it’s still beeping!!

When we had a smoke alarm doing similar I buried it in the shed overnight! Take it out to get a replacement and ask the store to dispose of it.

bananaapplepear · 24/02/2024 15:56

So I took it out of the water last night (it's been in there since thursday afternoon), the dark, murky, gungy water.

Guess what?

It's started beeping again.

I replaced a smoke alarm - bashing it to stop it beeping and put it in the bin - a couple of days later my NDN rang me at work to say that she had to take it out the bin as it was still beeping!

😂😂!

BaroqueInterlude · 24/02/2024 18:48

Bury it in the garden.

HappiestSleeping · 24/02/2024 18:48

Most importantly, do you have a new one?

bananaapplepear · 24/02/2024 19:46

Yes. It’s been replaced.

OP posts:
TheSlantedOwl · 24/02/2024 19:48

Smash with a hammer then. You must have googled the make and looked up how to stop the damn thing?

Singleandproud · 24/02/2024 19:50

@MumofSpud smashing smoke alarms risks exposing yourself to alpha radiation I wouldn't do that again, it's the casing that keeps you safe from it.

bananaapplepear · 24/02/2024 20:18

I have Slantedowl. There is no mention at all of her to dispose of it.

24 hours plus in bucket of water. Had my boiler serviced this week and was advised to replace mine. Apparently the bin men hate it if you throw them in the bin and then they go off, but he said it has to be at least 24 hours in water . . .

Beach2lion · 24/02/2024 21:13

Put it through the letter box of your most annoying neighbour and run away

bananaapplepear · 25/02/2024 14:39

Ours was in water for more like 48 hours and sill making a noise, albeit a tad quieter.

I put it in some really hot water yesterday and that seems to have done the trick.

The neighbour idea is funny but we like all of ours 😊😊

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 25/02/2024 17:41

We took a hammer to ours!

GrumpyPanda · 26/02/2024 04:29

Getting zombie vibes.

Xccccc · 26/02/2024 07:16

We tried everything, putting it in water , smashing it but to no avail . In the end I put it in a public bin away from the house while walking the dog It carried on beeping for a few days then stopped.

Tracker1234 · 01/03/2024 12:31

The sound goes right through you doesnt it. I had to use a screwdriver to lever the cover off (those are the instructions!) at 0100 in the morning whilst DH blissfully snoozed on. Then had to go downstairs and get another battery which started the dog off….

They are a stupid design probably so kids cannot get into them but if your child is on a chair trying to break into a fire alarm then methinks you have other issues to worry about!
